Cross Country: Doug Jager
Coach Doug Jager is married to Deb, and they have 4 children: Jessie (GRCHS Class of 2007), Nicki (Class of 2012), Cassie (Class of 2014), Benny (Class of 2015).
While attending Kalamazoo Christian High, Coach Jager earned 9 varsity letters while playing 3 sports: cross country, basketball, and track & field. And, he’s in the Kalamazoo Christian sports hall of fame! After high school, Coach attended Calvin University for 2 years, running cross country and track and field.
Outside of athletics, Coach Jager has been in the food industry for 42 years, having owned his own restaurant and catering business during that time. His wife of 34 years has help him through everything he has done.
In 2016 Coach was inducted into the MITCA Coach Hall of Fame. 2020 marks the start of his 30th year coaching cross country and track and field at Grand Rapids Christian. He has coached 6 state championship teams and 4 state runner up team in cross country. In addition, he has coached 1 MITCA team state champion team in track. Each one of his children ran on a state championship team.
Coach Jager’s favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11:
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Football: Kirk Sundberg and Rueben Riley
Kirk Sundberg was most recently a counselor and head football coach at Valley Christian High School in Arizona for two years. After taking over a program that was 3-7 in its previous two seasons, Sundberg was 17-7 with two trips to the playoffs and one trip to the state semi-finals. Previously he was the offensive coordinator at Valor Christian High School in Colorado for seven years where he was 83-13 and won five state titles. Sundberg played football at Wheaton College and is a 2004 graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. Kirk is married to Caroline, and they have four children, Calder (5), Blanchard (4), Yale (2), and Canyon (10 months).
Rueben Riley is student life coordinator at Grand Rapids Christian Middle School and current associate head coach of the varsity football team. During his time coaching at GRCHS, the Eagles compiled a 31-11 record. Riley played football for the University of Michigan where he was an All Big Ten selection in 2005 and Honorable Mention in 2006. After graduating from Michigan, he continued playing professionally for four different NFL teams. Rueben is a 2002 graduate of Creston High School in Grand Rapids. Rueben is married to Shanel, and they have two children, Brooklyn (8) and Harlem (7).
We know that they will lead and model as Christ-centered men who will coach our athletes to an elite level and mentor them to be passionate followers of Jesus.
Girls Golf: Coach Seth Davies
Coach Seth Davies is married to Valerie and they have three children: Koen, Tysen and Brielle. As a family they have a dog (Indi), two guinea pigs (Caramel and Brownie) and a variety of fish and snails!
Coach Davies graduated from London District Christian Secondary School where he played soccer, volleyball, basketball and badminton all 4 years. In addition, he served as Vice-President of the school’s student council.
After obtaining his BA from Calvin University, Coach got his MA from Western Michigan University. Currently, he’s employed as a social studies teacher at Grand Rapids Christian High School.

Coach Davies's favorite verse is Psalm 121:

Boys Soccer Head Coach Aric Dershem
Coach Aric Dershem is married to Marie and they have three children — Hannah (GRCHS Class of 2017), Anton (Class of 2021), and Christian (Class of 2024).
Aric graduated from Holland High School where he played soccer and made All Conference in the OK Red. Aric then went on to play soccer for Hope College where he was the starting GK for 4 years. He received All Conference honors his sophomore, junior and senior years and was Defensive MVP.
Since 1997, Aric has been employed at National Heritage Academies as VP of Administration (IT, Facilities & Construction, Food Service, Safety & Health).
Aric’s coaching experience includes:
- University of Notre Dame (1992-1994) – MCC Champions both years
- Indiana University (1995 & 1996) – Big 10 Champions both years
- GR Crew Juniors / Midwest United – GK coach & Assistant coach (2010-2018)
- GRFC Women GK coach – 2018 – Midwest Champions
- GRCHS – Girls Varsity (2019) – 15-5 – OK Gold Championship
We are excited that Aric now is heading up our boys soccer coaching staff in the fall in addition to his continuing coaching the girls soccer team in the spring!
Girls Swim and Dive: Mitch Schroder
Coach Mitch Schroder is a 2012 graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School and 2016 graduate of Calvin University. Mitch was a four-year swimmer for both schools and ended each program on the respective record boards. The 400 freestyle relay record still holds today at GRCHS with Beezhold, VanAllsburg, and Swets @ 3:11.67.
Mitch is the son of Steve and Jennifer Schroder and twin sibling to Megan Schroder as well as sibling to Madeline Schroder. He is now married to another 2012 grad from GRCH, Janel DeGraaf. Mitch works in the development office at Calvin Theological Seminary while Janel is a nurse at Mary Free Bed (currently working on the COVID recovery floor). Together they parent a big Labrador named Winston.
Boys Tennis: Tim Morey
Coach Tim Morey is married to Gina and they have two children. During quarantine they added a Goldendoodle to their household!
While in high school at Forest Hills Central, Coach Morey earned 6 varsity letters in tennis and soccer. After graduating high school, Coach attended the University of Notre Dame where he walked onto the tennis team.
Under Coach Morey’s guidance, the boys and the girls varsity tennis programs have won multiple Team Regional championships, a Conference championship, multiple State Runners-Up and Top 5 finishes. In addition, Morey has coached multiple individual Conference, Regional, and State champions as well as All-State student athletes.
Currently, Coach Morey is the head coach for our boys varsity tennis team, and he left the girls varsity tennis program to coach womens tennis at Calvin University this past year.
One of Coach Morey’s favorite verse is Psalm 103:2:

This is Coach Mitch's 5th year with GRCHS Girls Swimming and Diving. The team has managed to hold top 10 in the division all 5 years with the programs highest 4th place at the state championships in 2017. In the past two seasons they had the highest percentage of in-season best times across the entire conference!
His favorite passage comes out of Luke 15: 11-32 the parable of the prodigal son. Always forgive and be forgiven.
Volleyball: Tiffannie Gates
Coach Tiffannie Gates is married to Brent, and they have 5 children: Taylor (GRCHS Class of 2013), Brent Jr. (Class of 2015), Maddy (Class of 2018), Jordyn (Class of 2020), and Brady (Class of 2028). The family has two dogs, Winnie and Lillie.
In high school, Coach Gates attended Tustin High School (in Tustin, CA) where she played volleyball all 4 years. In her senior year, she made Volleyball Magazine’s Fab 50. With a full scholarship, Coach continued playing volleyball through college at Arizona State University as the setter.
Coach Gates’s over all coaching record is: 550-142. This record includes coaching for East Grand Rapids 2005-2010, and then at Grand Rapids Christian from 2011 to the present. Her career at Grand Rapids Christian includes back to back State Championships in 2018 and 2019!
Coach’s favorite verse is Philippians 4:6-7
