Alex Rakotomalala

Parent: Banou Ratovoarimanana.  

This is Alex’s 2nd year playing high school volleyball.  His favorite volleyball memory is the sea lion celebration. His favorite pre-game ritual or song is Sunflower by Post Malone and Swae Lee. He would tell younger players that errors can happen and just keep moving on. After high school, Alex will be attending Calvin University to study Mechanical Engineering.   

Ben Sytsma

Parents: Kyle and Michelle Systma 

Ben has played high school volleyball for all 4 years. His favorite volleyball memory is beating south Christian in regionals last year. Ben would like to tell younger players to be coachable. And remind them that if they don’t play consistently, find other ways to have fun on the team. After high school, Ben plans to attend Indiana Wesleyan University for chemistry and bowling.  

Constantine Kim 

Parents: Juno and Anne Kim. 

This is his 3rd year playing volleyball for the Eagles. His favorite volleyball memory is also beating South last year in the regional finals. Constantine would tell younger players to have fun and prevent injury before injury. After high school, Constantine plans to attend the University of Michigan.   

Will Vandenberg

Parents: Todd and Shari Vandenberg

He has played high school volleyball all 4 years for the Eagles.  Will would tell younger players to enjoy volleyball and be willing to accept criticism.  Next year, Will plans to attend Illinois Institute of Technology to study architecture.

Alex, Ben, Constantine, and Will: Thank you so much for your hard work this season, and also over the past several years.

To me, this group of seniors represents tremendous growth; as individual players, and as a boys volleyball program here at Grand Rapids Christian. Four years ago, Ben and Will were two of just three freshmen to participate in our program - and the year before that, we had just one. This year, we have 10 freshmen competing. And hopefully, those current freshmen have paid attention to the tremendous example of humility and a team-first attitude that these four young men have set this year. If you’ve watched us play at all this season, you know that we have a very talented team. And for this group, that has meant perhaps a smaller - or at least different - role than each might prefer. But I have heard not a single complaint from any of them. Instead, they have embraced their roles, been ready when called upon, and have continuously found ways to maximize their contributions - consistently doing all the little things necessary for team success. It’s been a privilege to coach each of you and see your growth and maturation - best wishes to you all as you wrap up your senior year in the coming weeks.
