The girls’ cross country team returned to their home course at Gainey, greeted by a truly beautiful fall morning that offered a welcome change from the intense heat of the previous weekend. With the Conference Finals meet fast approaching on Wednesday, the Eagles approached the Kent Ottawa Invitational with a strategic focus. Most of the squad opted to run the shorter distance, utilizing the meet as a targeted "tune-up" to sharpen their speed and maintain momentum heading into their championship race. This allowed the runners to push pace and feel strong without taxing their legs before the big competition. Zoe Hoekstra led the way by winning the 3200m race! She was followed closely by Lilah Poel (3rd), Lucy Waalkes (4th), Joy Van Wyk (6th), Annika TerBeek (7th), Eva Lindstrom (8th), Maggie Scholma (10th), Gwyn Artz (11th), Sonia Takto (12th), Alena Sportel (14th), and Will Peterson (18th).
While most of the team focused on the shorter distance, Emily Plantinga and Natalia Oren stepped up to race the full course. Both girls ran great, showing impressive endurance and heart as they just missed achieving new Personal Records (PRs).
The successful day at Gainey served its purpose, confirming that the Eagles are healthy, sharp, and ready to compete at the OK White Conference Finals meet at Riverside Park this Wednesday.
