The air was brisk, and the grass was crispy with frost when the Eagles arrived at South Christian early Saturday morning. Despite these cold conditions, the girls' cross country team thawed out enough to secure a second-place Regional finish and punch their ticket to the State Finals. The team secured its state qualification by placing four runners in the top eight. These four Eagles earned All-Region accolades: Lilah Poel led the team in 5th place. She was followed by Zoe Hoekstra (6th), Lucy Waalkes (7th), and Eva Lindstrom (8th).
The incredible depth of the program was on full display in the Post Regional Open Meet (PROM). The Eagles dominated the PROM by sweeping the first five spots! Joy Van Wyk took the overall victory in the open race, clocking a time that would have placed her 12th in the varsity field. She was followed by a powerful pack including Sonia Tatko, Alena Sportel, Willa Peterson, and Gwyn Artz.
The course was a bit wet and squishy, making personal records (PRs) hard to come by, but June Acheson (22:15) and Kate Triezenberg (23:54) managed to run the best time of their career!
The Eagles now set their sights on the biggest race of the season: the State Finals this Saturday at the Michigan International Speedway (MIS). Go Eagles!
