On a day where we were able to honor veterans from our golf community, the team played its best collective round of the year shooting 300 at a very tough American Dunes Golf Course in and event aimed at raising money for Folds of Honor. We played for, and honored Scott O'Grady (Sawyer's Uncle) and Ed Reitsma (grandfather of Cooper). The Eagles were led in scoring by Sawyer O'Grady's 2-under par 70 (T2nd), Cooper Reitsma's 75, freshman Charlie Stehouwer's 76, and Davis Hutt's 79.
SCOTT O'GRADY: United States Air Force Captain Scott O’Grady(call sign "Basher 52") became an international hero after surviving for six days behind enemy lines in Bosnia in June 1995. Shot down by a Serbian surface-to-air missile while patrolling the NATO no-fly zone, O'Grady utilized his specialized SERE training to evade capture. His ordeal involved dodging hostile patrols, drinking rainwater, and eating insects and plants to survive, as documented in his memoir, Return With Honor.
On June 8, 1995, a daring, high-risk rescue operation was launched by the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit from the USS Kearsarge, successfully extracting him despite hostile fire. Following his rescue, O'Grady became a symbol of American resilience, met with President Clinton, and later became a motivational speaker. He is the proud uncle to Sawyer O’Grady.
ED REITSMA: Ed served in teh US Army. He was inducted on February 10th, 1954 and was discharged on January 27th, 1965. His active duty was served with the 3rd armored cavalry regiment in Bavaria Germany serving as occupation force until 1955. Then he served a border patrol unity on the German-Czech boarder. Fortunately, Ed studied German in high school and college and was selected to go to Europe instead of Korea. He held the rank of specialist during this time in the military. He is the grandfather of Cooper Reitsma.
