Boys Varsity Tennis vs. Multiple Opponents

The Eagles traveled to Forest Hills Northern Friday to compete in one of the toughest Conference Tournaments in the State, featuring the top 2 teams in Division 2 (FHN #1, FHC #2) and the #14 ranked Byron Center.  The Eagles, currently ranked #6 in Division 3, earned the trip with a historic win over East Grand Rapids last week.

In the first semifinal, the Eagles fell 7-1 to FHN.  #1 Singles and Captain Simon Volkema took out FHN in a rousing 3-set victory that saw Volkema relinquish a late lead only to charge forward to victory 6-4 in the final stanza.

After some tough matches against FHN, Byron Center showed up at FHN to play the Eagles in the lowest temps of the season.  The Bulldogs had beaten the Eagles 5-3 earlier in the season and started the match with a lot of confidence.

The Eagles proved that revenge is a dish best served cold, as the team took down BC 6-2 in a thorough team performance, with every flight winning at least one set to reverse the earlier season result.  Junior Captains Simon Volkema and Tanner Warners won again in singles against the Bulldogs at #1 and #4 Singles, respectively, as did #1 Doubles Cade Boender and Charlie Walters.  Juniors Sam VanSchepen and Ethan DeBlecourt, along with Sophomore Luke Gelderloos and Freshman Parker Seth won at #2 and #4 Doubles, respectively, and Senior Captain Alex Lowell. beat his opponent at #2 singles to complete the 6-2 reversal.  Senior and Freshman Peter and Isaiah Bos and Junior Alex Cook also competed well, taking a set off of their opponents.

The result propels the Eagles into the Regional/District Championships this Thursday at the Zandee Tennis Center.  The Eagles earned the #1 Overall Seed in the Tournament and are set to host the field of 5 teams vying for a trip to the State Finals.  The Eagles play at 11:30 and following the other semifinal between 2 and 4.
