The Eagles traveled to the east side of the state to compete in the biggest tournament of the season, the Beast of the East. This 32-team event brings together top programs from all over Michigan for a highly competitive day of volleyball.
The Eagles opened pool play facing strong east side teams to determine their placement in the gold, silver, or bronze brackets. They started the day against Stevenson and came away with a 2-0 win, taking the sets 26-24 and 25-18.
Next up was a tough matchup against top-ranked Brighton High School. The Eagles came in ready for Brighton’s aggressive offense and they stepped up in a big way. Behind aggressive serving and a powerful offensive offense, the Eagles took control. Mya McKinnon led in serving with 4 aces and added 2 key blocks. On defense, Grace Goodyke held it down with 5 digs, and both players were strong offensively as well, Goodyke with 7 kills and McKinnon with 5. Taylor Frost helped steer the offense, contributing 10 assists. The Eagles pulled off a big 2-0 win with set scores of 25-12 and 25-23.
With the win over Brighton, the Eagles advanced to the gold bracket, opening bracket play against St. Mary’s Catholic Central. The team played a sharp, efficient match with an impressive team hitting percentage of .448. Both Taylor Frost and Mya McKinnon posted a hitting percentage of .600, leading the offensive charge. The team totaled 30 kills, with Goodyke leading the way with 11. At the service line, Frost was unstoppable, racking up 6 aces, contributing to the team’s total of 12. Consistent passing played a huge role in the win, with a team passing average of 2.4, led by Zoey Klunder’s near-perfect 2.9. On defense, Rylee Anderson made key contributions with 4 big digs.
In the quarterfinals, the Eagles faced west-side rival and No. 6-ranked Hudsonville. They ultimately fell 0-2 but finished among the tournament’s top eight, an outstanding achievement. Mya McKinnon was named to the All-Tournament Team, one of only 12 players selected from the entire event.
The Eagles now look ahead to their final regular-season home match on Youth Night against Catholic Central High School. Join us at 6:00 PM at the Quest Center to cheer on the team!
