The Grand Rapids Christian Eagles made their way to South Christian High School to face the #5-ranked Holland Christian Maroons in the Regional Semifinal, and came away with a thrilling 3–1 victory.
In the opening set, the Eagles dominated behind strong first contacts and consistency from the service line, posting a 92% serving rate. Rylee Anderson led the way with three aces, while solid passing helped fuel a balanced offense. The team averaged a 2.1 passing average for the set, with Grace Goodyke leading at a 2.4. The Eagles took control early and closed out the set convincingly, 25–15.
The second set saw the Maroons jump to an early lead, forcing the Eagles to battle back. Showing resilience and grit, Grand Rapids Christian made their way back into the game with exceptional serve receive passing and defense from Piper Cebulski and Taylor Frost, who each notched eight digs. The Eagles were able to run a fast offense allowing our middles Mya McKinnon and Sylvia Setsma to take control, they combined seven kills and zero errors, the Eagles rallied to take the set, 25–23.
In the third, momentum swung back toward Holland Christian as the Maroons capitalized on a slow start from the Eagles. Despite a late push into extra points, Grand Rapids Christian fell just short, 24–26.
Determined to finish strong, the Eagles came out firing in the fourth. Goodyke took over at the net with 8 of the team’s 12 kills, while Zoey Klunder held down the back row with 5 digs. In the final moments, Cebulski set up Goodyke for a big back-row attack to seal the set, and the match, 25–23.
For the match, the Eagles hit an impressive .398 as a team. McKinnon led with 11 kills on zero errors, posting a stellar .733 hitting percentage. Goodyke turned in a standout performance, recording her second double-double of the season with 25 kills, 10 digs, and a 2.3 passing average. McKinnon and Setsma also added 3 blocks apiece.
Once again, the Eagles showed teamwork, heart, and passion for the game — and for each other. They advance to the Regional Final against Grand Rapids Catholic Central at South Christian High School, Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
