Twenty turnovers erased a championship level defensive effort as Grand Rapids Christian fell 45–38 on the road to Hudsonville High School on Monday night.
On the road, effort is not enough. You either value the ball or you donate the game.
Grand Rapids Christian defended with purpose, grit, and unity. The Eagles talked, rotated, and competed for 32 minutes. That part traveled. That part mattered.
What did not travel was ball security.
For the third consecutive game, Grand Rapids Christian committed 20 turnovers, and no amount of defensive pride can survive that math. Especially against an high level opponent. Each giveaway became a silent vote against momentum, rhythm, and opportunity.
Still, there was truth in the fight.
Pabegg Anyijong led the Eagles with 14 points, refusing to disappear when the game tightened. DJ Cummings added 7, while AJ Williams scored 4. Sam Anderson, Hayden Vess, Javi Cummings, and Kayden Buyck each chipped in 2 as scoring came in fragments rather than flow.
This was not a game lost for lack of effort. It was lost for lack of discipline. Defense is about will. Ball security is about habits. One inspires belief. The other decides outcomes.
The lesson is clear and unapologetic. When effort meets execution, this group can compete anywhere. Until then, the film does not lie, and neither does the scoreboard. Growth is demanding. Progress is uncomfortable. But the truth, handled honestly, is what moves programs forward.
