Grand Rapids Christian participated in a high-powered early season quad at Grand Haven High School on Tuesday night. In addition to the host Buccaneers - the top-ranked Div.1 team in the state - the event featured Lowell, Grand Rapids Christian, and Holland Christian, currently ranked #1, #2, and #3 in the state for Div. 2.
In the Eagles' opening match, they defeated the Red Arrows of Lowell in straight sets, 25-15, 28-26. Leading the way for Grand Rapids Christian was Sophomore Middle Blocker Braden Brouwer, who led the team with 8 kills on 13 hitting attempts in the win.
In their second match of the night, Grand Rapids Christian faced off with Holland Christian - a rematch of last year's state quarterfinal. The Eagles avenged last year's defeat, again putting together a strong first set to grab momentum, and taking the victory 25-11, 25-18. Outside Hitter Alex Nelson led Grand Rapids Christian with 12 kills, and Eli Wise contributed 22 assists.
In the final contest of the night, the Eagles faced off against host Grand Haven. In a highly entertaining match, the Eagles fell just short, losing in three back-and-forth sets, 23-25, 25-20, 22-25. Jack Scholten paired 11 kills with strong defensive play for Grand Rapids Christian, but the Eagles couldn't quite overcome Grand Haven's strong offensive attack.
This concludes competition for the Eagles until after Spring Break, when they will host the opening Tri of their Conference season on April 14 in the Quest Center.
