Eagle Athletes Get Back on Track.

After missing the track and field season last spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic, both the boys and girls track and field squads got their seasons off to stellar starts with dominant wins over South Christian on Tuesday.

Eagle Boys won 14 of the 17 events en route to an 88 to 44 victory.

Andre Irving led the Eagles to a clean sweep of the top three spots in the 100, and also took the victory in the 200. In the 400, the Eagles were led by Jon LaRue, who turned in a PR time of 54.62 to win.

In the distance events, Reuben Wiering won the 800 in 2:18; Jack Peterson won the 1600 in 4:47; and Joe Waalkes ran away with a 3200 win in 11:06.

Adam Sarjo was the king of the throws, earning the win in the shot put (39’5”) and the discus (123’8”). Simon Vanderbroek won the high jump, while Parker Doornbos won the long jump. Joey Rauwerda won the pole vault with a jump of 12’0”.

The Eagles won the 4 x 200 and the 4 x 800, and put an exclamation mark on the meet in the days’ final event, the 4 x 400 relay. After leading through the first two legs, South Christian took the lead on the third 400. Jon LaRue took the baton trailing by eight meters, but pulled even on the back stretch. Casting a glance over his shoulder, he pulled away from the competition and powered home to victory, running a stellar 52.9 split to give the Eagles a win in 3:45.

Grand Rapids Christian will look to build on their early-season success when they participate in an OK White Quadrangular meet on Thursday, April 15th.
