Girls Varsity Basketball Loses in Overtime to West Catholic in the Regional Championship
1 year ago
Eagles Lose: 45 - 53
Thursday night the Eagles finished their season. It was a heartbreaking end, but it was also the night the girls had been waiting for after four long months and they knew it would be a very hard fight. The Eagles became the first team to take West Catholic (the overall number 1 seed) to an overtime finish. After a wonderfully executed game plan and an impressive rally after a tough third quarter, the girls left every ounce of themselves on the court. As a coach it was one of those days you could not be more proud of, but you wish the outcome could have been different. Katelyn LaRue was outstanding with the ball in her hands and went down fighting, finishing with 22 points, 15 of them from behind the arc. Meanwhile Pace Rickard defended another Miss Basketball nominee better than we could have ever asked. Lydia and Hannah Sall were dynamic in finding each other down low and had great moments of attacking at the rim. Alexia Meeuwsen added huge minutes and made a big impact with pressure down low and great heads up play. Flavia Karungi was leading the bench squad in an electric Comstock Park gym. These seniors changed this program for the better and have SO much to hold their heads high about. The girls fought back from being down 12 points and even had a chance at a shot to win at the end of regulation. It was an amazing night and we could not be more proud of them. Thank you so much Eagles, you made everyone around you better.

Eagles Win: 57 - 33
Senior night came to the Quest Tuesday night and the 6 seniors did not disappoint. The Eagles faced the Yellowjackets of Greenville and they came out on top. This incredible senior group combined for 47 of the 57 points and that is only a fraction of what they have contributed to this program. However we will talk stats here first. The Eagles had a strong performance wire to wire on both sides of the court. The girls totaled 15 steals, 18 assists and 32 rebounds. Lydia Sall was the stat leader on the day with 10 rebounds, 9 points, 5 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocks. What a senior night. Pace Rickard was right there with 12 points, 8 assists. Katelyn LaRue also finished with 10 points. Alexia Meeuwsen worked hard on the boards and also finished with a couple baskets. Flavia Karungi sent the crowd going wild on a textbook up and under. Meanwhile Hannah Sall selflessly started on the bench to give her other 5 seniors the start. It was a great team effort to almost close out an incredible career in the Quest with these 6 seniors. The speeches given by their younger teammates were great nods to the wonderful contributions of each of them and they will be greatly missed. Thank you seniors for your legacy you have left with each of us, you make us so proud to be a part of GRC girls basketball.

Pace Rickard then came alive offensively in the third quarter putting up 8 points in that 8 minutes. Sofie Hulst added baskets and helped the girls go into the fourth tied at 45. However, the 4th quarter defense and very balanced team scoring is what brought the Eagles out on top. We managed to score 22 points in the 4th led by Hannah Sall.
