Boy's Varsity Tennis Makes Historic Run to Finish in 4th at the State Finals

Eagles Lose: -
The #5 ranked Eagles, after winning their Regional tournament for the fourth straight year, traveled to the State Finals this past weekend in Midland.  The Division 3 Finals is arguably the toughest Division having 3 of the Top 5 ranked teams across all Divisions in the entire State; several of the Eagles 8 flights had wins over top seeded teams in Division 2 and 4, yet were shockingly unseeded in the State Finals.   The Eagles did enter the tournament with 3 seeded teams but with several difficult draws. Unfazed, the team came together at the right time, with nearly every flight scoring points to finish fourth and getting four flights into the semifinals with two State Finalists.  The environment was raucous, rowdy, and would be intimidating to a less experienced team, as several other schools folded under the relentless onslaught of obnoxious cheering and jeering.  The second day the competition moved indoors, putting the fans literally right next to the courts.  There was no hiding from the intensity and spotlight of the moment, and the Eagles handled the pressure phenomenally. #2 Doubles, featuring Seniors Cade Boender and Charlie Walters, All-State from a year ago, started off the points for the Eagles beating Haslett 6-1,6-4.  While the duo has wins over top teams and near wins against some of the best teams in the state, Boender/Walters were stuck in a part of the draw where they faced top seeded Country Day after the W.  Proving they deserved a better draw, the Eagles came out strong going up a break 5-3 in the first and battled to a 6-6 tiebreak.  The big upset was not to be, however, as Boender/Walters fell 7-6, 6-4. Country Day did not face a stiffer challenge than the Eagles in any of their matches until their three set final win.  Also coming out strong in his first State Finals was Sophomore Lucas Piñon. Piñon, coming in from Valencia, Spain, has been a great addition for the Eagles but also had a tough draw, feeding into the #2 seed and State Finalist/Runner-Up from Cranbrook.  Piñon earned a big point for the Eagles before bowing out.  Callum Campbell, a freshman at #4 singles had a great season but fell in the first round to Ludington in a tough match. At #2 Singles, Senior Alex Cook, a four year Varsity Player, shook out as another surprisingly unseeded player, and did not catch a break on his placement in the draw.  Undeterred, Cook played a massive 2 point first round match against a big lefty from St. John’s.  Cook jumped out to a quick lead and held off his opponent in the first set 6-3. In closing out the match, Cook made exceptional decisions and outworked his opponent 6-4.  In losing to the eventual State Champion from Greenhills, Cook closed out a great singles career reaching the Quarterfinals. Alex was All-Conference multiple years and took on a very tough season playing #2 for the Eagles, and concluded his season as one of the top ten #2 players in the state. State Semifinalists The Eagles had four flights reach the Semifinals winning two matches on the first day.  The #3 seeded Senior Simon Volkema, with multiple wins over the #1 seed in D2 and only having one loss on his season won his first match in about a half hour 6-1,6-0.  Holland Christian was next, and Volkema was mentally prepared where his opponent was not.  After a closer first set than expected, Volkema rolled to a 6-2 second set victory with the rowdy crowd at the Finals supporting Volkema.  In the Semifinals, Volkema fell to Cranbrook in an extremely tight 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) match that had more swings than a playground.  Volkema concludes his career as a Four-Year All-Conference and All-State Player with over 100 wins at #1 and is headed to Williams College to play tennis next year. Notwithstanding their great record and efforts by Coach Morey to earn them a seed at the Finals, Sophomores Parker Seth and Isaiah Bos entered the tournament unseeded.  With the proverbial chip on their shoulders, Seth/Bos faced off against #6 seeded Ludington, whom the Seed Committee decided were the better choice over the Eagles.  Proving the Committee wrong, Seth/Bos stomped into the Quarterfinals with a 6-4,6-2 win over the Orioles.  Not done, our unseeded team fought through some significant adversity to upset the #3 seeded Greenhills team in three sets, 6-4 in the third set.  In the semifinals, Seth/Bos fell to Cranbrook 6-4,6-3 ending one of the most special runs of the entire tournament as an unseeded team into the semifinals. State Finalists Seniors Sam Van Schepen and Ethan DeBlecourt earned the #3 seed entering the tournament by virtue of their recent run with wins over FHN (seeded #2 D2), FHC (seeded #6 D2) and a big win over EGR at Regionals.  After not dropping a game in their first match 6-0,6-0 over Haslett, the tandem played a very solid St. Clair team with no visible weaknesses to exploit.  Down a set, the two fought back to win in 3 sets with some stellar net play by DeBlecourt, some unbreakable groundstrokes from Van Schepen, and some stellar coaching by Coach Tim Volkema who got there during the second set comeback. Heading into their semifinals against the #2 seed Country Day, the Van Schepen/DeBlecourt punched them in the mouth figuratively, shocking the team by taking the first set. Clinging by a thread, Country Day barely one of the second, 7-6 (7-5 in the tiebreak). Aided by some key coaching from Coach Dave Hartman, they regrouped and pushed through to the upset in 3 sets 6-3 in the third.  The State title was not to be, however, as the two ran up against two extremely good players from Cranbrook.  Van Schepen/DeBlecourt proved they were deserving of recognition by winning the first set 6-4 before Cranbrook came back to win. Coming into the tournament seeded #1 with only one loss, Seniors Tanner Warners and Dream Kwon faced a very deep and experienced draw at #1 Doubles.  With Warner’s ridiculous net play and Kwon’s big forehand, the pair rolled into the semifinals with a 6-3,6-0 win over Mason and followed it up with a 6-3,6-1 win over St. Joe, their third of the year. Up next was EGR as the #4 seed.  Having barely escaped EGR at Conference Tournament with a three set win after a 7-6,7-6 win during their Conference season, the match was sure to be tight.  Nothing could be further than what unfolded, as fan favorite Warners and Kwon rode the energy of the crowd playing on a show court to make a ridiculously low 11 unforced errors on the match to win 6-0,6-1.  In the State Finals, #2 seed Country Day beat St. Clair.  Warners/Kwon came out as they did against EGR, albeit against a tougher opponent.  In easily the best doubles match played all year in any Division, the Eagles won the first set 6-4 with only one break of serve.  The second set was more of a roller coaster, but Warners/Kwon found themselves serving for the match 5-4.  Country Day fought back and it went into a tiebreak.  In a back and forth tiebreak, Country Day lucked into just a few key breaks to win the tiebreak 10-8.  Warners/Kwon could not regroup and fell 6-3 in the third.  The pair finished the season with 2 losses. Warners finishes his career with over 100 wins, and he and Volkema are two of the winningest players in school history.   This group of seniors: Cade Boender, Alex Cook, Ethan DeBlecourt, Aaron Dorner, Dream Kwon, Sam VanSchepen, Simon Volkema, Charlie Walters, and Tanner Warners have all contributed to the success of the Eagles not just this year but for four straight in some capacity.  This is one of the most decorated groups of seniors to come through the program with State Finalists, All-State, All-Area, All-Conference, and All-State Academic players.  Two players, Simon Volkema and Tanner Warners, have possibly the most wins in school history.  The 4th place finish is one of the highest in school history for both programs, but especially on the boy’s side.  They will truly be missed!

Eagles Lose: -
The #5 ranked Eagles, coming off a 2nd place finish at the OK-White Conference tournament behind D2 Favorite FHN and ahead of FHC, EGR, and BC, had strong seeds and positions at the Regional Tournament based on their season-long body of work.  The Eagles made good on those seeds, and clinched the program’s fourth straight regional title and trip to the D3 State Finals.  The Eagles also had 6 of 8 flights finish as Champions or Runners-Up. Having beaten EGR for the 3rd time in ten days, the Eagles proved they are the top D3 Team and one of the best teams on the West Side. At #3 Doubles, Seniors Sam VanSchepen and Ethan “Gweeder” DeBlecourt avenged a loss to EGR from a week ago, steamrolling the Pioneers 6-2,6-4. The second set was tight for the duo, holding off a comeback and some close line calls.  Seniors Tanner “Lenny” Warners and Dream Kwon won in a walkover over EGR.  Having beaten EGR twice already this season, along with some key wins over east side teams, the team has only one loss heading into the State Finals at #1 Doubles. At #1 Singles, Senior Simon “Si Guy” Volkema closed out the individual Regional Championships for the Eagles, rolling Holland Christian in straight sets to cap an individual 4-Peat of championships.  With only 1 loss on the season, Volkema looks strong heading into the State Finals. With a combined 9 points to bolster the Eagles, 3 flights reached the Regional Finals.  At #2 Singles, Senior Alex “Cookie” Cook has been reliable all season and he did not disappoint on Wednesday, reaching the finals before falling to a very tough Holland Christian opponent.  Cook closes his 4 year varsity career and is looking sharp heading into the Finals.  At #4 Doubles, Sophomores Parker Seth and Isaiah “Junior” Bos also reached the Finals, defeating Holland Christian in the Semis before flip flopping a conference win in a loss to EGR.  The new duo has come on lately though, after a tough first week the team beat EGR and FHC and looks like they could make a run at the Finals.  At #2 Doubles, Cade Boender and Charlie “Chi” Walters reached the finals to face EGR for the third time in 10 days.  The team, All-State from a year ago, came out showing grit in coming back from a deficit to win the first set before EGR rebounded to take the second and third.     Securing the Championship over the Pioneers, Sophomore #3 Singles Lucas “El Jefe” Pinon and Freshman #4 Singles Callum Campbell won key 2 point matches for a combined 4 points.  Without those wins, the Eagles would have finished second to the Pioneers by one point, proving it was a total team effort with every flight securing points.  Pinon and Campbell have been improving all season and are peaking at the right time before State Finals. They look to put the exclamation point on a historic season at the State Finals next Friday and Saturday at the Midland Community Tennis Center.

Eagles Lose: 4 - 4
It was a good day for the Eagles at Zandee Courts at Gainey on Wednesday.  The Eagles (ranked 5th in Division 3) tied the Rangers from FHC (ranked 7th in Division 2) after 8 hard-fought matches. Simon Volkema won at 1-Singles in a spirited affair,  6-3, 7-5.  Lucas Pinon followed suit at 3-Singles, winning a tight match 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.  Callum Campbell had an awesome match against his opponent at 4-Singles, winning the first Eagle point at 6-2, 6-0. Cade Boender and Charlie Walters had to secure the tie with a tough, hard-fought match, finishing in the twilight by gutting out a 3-set victory 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 with both teams watching and cheering them on.  It was an awesome sight and an awesome win for two Seniors who stepped up when needed to gain the tie for the Eagles. In the toughest conference in the state, the Eagles are well-tested and ready for the post-season, beginning on Friday at the OK-White conference tournament, hosted by FHC>

Eagles Win: 5 - 3
In an epic OK-White battle between two Division-3 top ten teams, the Eagles came away with a huge 5-3 victory on the road at the Canepa courts of EGR.  Every flight was hotly contested and the emotion was high.  The fans (including Sra. Klaver) were not disappointed. The singles flights carried the torch for the Eagles, led by Seniors Simon Volkema and Alex Cook at 1 and 2 Singles respectively, hammering their opponents to set the tone.  Both of them won by dominating scores of 6-0, 6-2.  Lucas Pinon continued the onslaught, winning a clutch match 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5).  Freshman Callum Campbell secured at least a tie for the visiting team by winning a hard-fought match at 4-singles 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). In the doubles action, the matches were equally tough, but 3 and 4-doubles went to the Pioneers.  Cade Boender and Sir Charles Walters were incredibly tough after losing their first set 6-0 and found themselves down 4-1 in their second set before battling back to win 5 straight games and forcing a third set which they eventually suffered a tough loss in 3 sets 0-6, 6-4,4-6.  Tanner Warners and Dream Kwon secured the win with an exciting two-hour two-set match 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-3) win to secure the HUGE win for the Eagles. It was the second year in a row that the Eagles have dispatched perennial powerhouse EGR.  There is no rest for the victors as the Eagles face Greenville Tuesday in another OK-White matchup and then Division 2  juggernaut Forest Hills Central (ranked #3 in Division 2) in another must-win match on Wednesday.  Both of these matches are at 4:15 at Gainey.

Eagles Lose: -
At Grandville High School Saturday, the Eagles battled the host school as well as former City League opponent Catholic Central and Holt. GRC met little opposition as they imposed their will on all three opponents, beating Grandville and Catholic Central 8-1 and keeping a clean slate against Holt, winning 9-0. Highlights for the day included Simon Volkema, Alex Cook, Lucas Pinon and Callum Campbell running through their Singles opponents without a hiccup, although Lucas had to take care of his Holt opponent at 3-Singles by winning a tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets. Tanner Warners/Dream Kwon handled 1-doubles all day, as did Cade Boender/Charlie Walters at 2-doubles.  Ethan DeBlecourt/Sam VanSchepen  won three matches at 3-doubles in dominating fashion.  Aaron Dorner, Luke Gelderloos, Isaiah Bos and Parker Seth handled the duties at 4 and 5 doubles, by mix and matching partners. It is a HUGE week for the Eagles, beginning Monday against OK-White opponent East Grand Rapids at the Canepa courts of EGR (courts are on the corner of Lake Drive and Hall).

The Eagles tied the Bulldogs of Byron Center today and the Bulldogs were more happy than the Eagles.  Simon Volkema continued his dominance of the best Singles players in the area, winning easily 6-0, 6-1 against his opponent.  Cade Boender and Charlie Walters were equally dominant against their 2-doubles opponents, playing great team tennis en route to an easy, well-played 6-1, 6-0 win. Tanner Warners and Dream Kwon continued their undefeated streak at 1-doubles, overcoming an uncharacteristic shaky start, down 3-4 in the first set, but winning the final 9 games of the match to win their match 6-4, 6-0.  Sam VanSchepen and Ethan DeBlecourt had a great match at 3-doubles in a spirited affair, and came away with a key win, securing the tie at 6-4, 6-4. Callum Campbell at 4-Singles gave his all dropping a tough one in 3 sets 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, while the 4-doubles team of Parker Seth and Luke Gelderloos fought equally hard dropping a heartbreaker 4-6, 6-2, 1-6. Next up for the Eagles is a very competitive Rockford Quad at Rockford High School on Saturday.  It will be a great test for the boys.

Eagles Lose: -
The Boys Varsity Tennis team traveled to Zeeland East High School Saturday for a Quad with Jenison, Spring Lake and the host school.  The Eagles played without their normal 1 and 2 Singles players which made the day even more interesting.  In the first dual, Isaiah Bos and Aaron Dorner battled admirably at 1 and 2 Singles respectively, each taking a game from their opponent.  The Eagles eventually prevailed over the Wildcats, winning 6-2, with Lucas Pinon, Callum Campbell, Tanner Warners/Dream Kwon, Cade Boender/Charile Walters, Sam VanSchepen/Ethan DeBlecourt, and Luke Gelderloos/Parker Seth all winning in straight sets. Next up for the Eagles were the Chix of Zeeland East.  Lucas Pinon played at 1-Singles and won a thrilling 5-7, 6-4 (10-8) match over his opponent. In the makeshift lineup, Adam Workman played 2-Singles and dispatched his opponent in straight-set fashion 6-0, 6-0.  Spencer Slagboom won at 3-singles 6-1, 6-1.  Parker Seth and Aaron Dorner came through at 4-doubles without losing a game.  All other flights came through with straight set victories...except for the thrilling match that Callum Campbell played at 4-singles.  In a crazy match with all kinds of ebb and flow, the resilient Freshman persevered in a hard-fought marathon, winning 6-3, losing the second set 6-7 and then winning an awesome 14-12 tiebreaker (play to 10, win by 2). Against Spring Lake, the Doubles teams cruised, assuring the Eagles at least a tie.  Richie Verhoef came through with a hard-fought 2-6, 7-6 (7-2),10-8 tiebreaker victory at 3-Singles.  Isaiah Bos won a close one at 4-singles 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) battling his opponent for every point.  Lucas Pinon won again at 1-Singles closing out a perfect 3-0 day for the Eagles with a 7-1 victory. Next up for the Eagles is a conference match on Wednesday at Byron Center.  Match time is 4:15.

On a blustery day on the North side of town, the Eagles hit the road in an OK White conference matchup with the Northview Wildcats.  The boys in Blue and Black continued their winning ways, dispatching their opponents 8-0 without losing a set.  Simon Volkema started it off at 1 Singles with another outstanding performance, albeit in 32 minutes, winning 6-0, 6-0.  The other Singles flights followed suit, with Alex Cook playing aggressive Tennis and winning at 2 (6-2, 6-2).  Lucas Pinone took care of his Wildcat opponent at 3-Singles (6-1, 6-1) and Callum Campbell quietly but efficiently dominated his opponent at 4-Singles (6-0, 6-1). As temperatures soared, the Chelsea Bulldogs came to town and defeated the Eagles at home.  The overall score of the match, 6-2 for Chelsea, was misleading, as the Eagles fought through some new pairings and extremely close matches decided by tiebreaks. Senior Simon Volkema kept his momentum going at #1 Singles, and #3 Doubles Sam Van Schepen/Ethan DeBlecourt won in straight sets.  Senior Alex Cook lost a very close match at #2 Singles, 11-9 in the third set Super Tiebreak.   Against Eastern, the Eagles got out to quick leads at #1 Doubles (Tanner Warners/Aaron Dorner), and #2 Doubles (Cade Boender/Charlie Walters), and Sam VanSchepen was dominating at #4 singles with a huge coin toss victory before the match was called. The Eagles host the Red Arrows at 4PM on Wednesday.

Eagles Lose: -
Proving that Eagles hunt at night, the Varsity Tennis Team turned around from a late night at the Sturgis Invitational to dominate the late night Michigan State Invitational in the shadows of Spartan Stadium.   Fighting some fatigue as the day wore on, the Eagles continued to persevere, winning 7 of 8 flights, and only dropping one match along the way for the entire tournament.  Finishing the tournament as the best player there was Simon Volkema at #1 Singles.  Not to be outdone, #1 Doubles Tanner Warners and Dream Kwon came from 3-6 down in the second set tiebreak to end the day with a huge 8-6 win that saw the team rush the court.  #2 Singles Alex Cook dominated Romeo in his final, and #2 Doubles Cade Boender and Charlie Walters beat a overmatched Midland Chemic team.  At #3 Singles, Lucas "El Jefe" Pinon had a very long day that saw him come back from being down in two matches to claim a title. Sam VanSchepen and Ethan DeBlecourt won a quality match against the Chemics at #3 Doubles, and #4 Doubles saw the trio of Parker Seth/Luke Gelderloos/Aaron Dorner rotate through to win all three of their matches to win the Title.   The team has a solid week of practice ahead of it before a double dual this coming Saturday.  The first two tournaments have set the stage for a run to the State Finals in Midland.

Eagles Lose: -
The Eagles Varsity Tennis Team jumped into the deep end to start their season, traveling to Sturgis to take on the State Champion and Runner-Up, along with two other Top 10 Division 3 teams, and a Top 5 Division 2 Team from a year ago.   Undaunted, the Eagles finished third behind Cranbrook Kingswood and Ann Arbor Greenhills, the Champion and Runner-Up last season, and beat Midland Dow who finished 5th in Division 2 a year ago. Leading the day were Seniors Tanner Warners and Dream Kwon, who beat Greenhills in their first match of their season and followed it up by beating Cranbrook the very next match en route to the #1 Doubles Title. 4 other flights finished third: Senior Simon Volkema at #1 Singles edged Midland Dow, Senior Alex Cook held off Sturgis at #2 Singles, Seniors Cade Boender and Charlie Walters shut down Forest Hills Eastern at #2 Doubles, and Seniors Sam VanSchepen and Ethan DeBlecourt rounded out the third place finishers.   The Eagles quickly turned around to play the Michigan State Invitational the following day.
