Scholar Athletes of the Year 2024

Posted on 06/03/2024

Congratulations to Henry Jackson and Robyn Tatko on earning this year's Scholar Athlete awards.  They are multi-sport athletes with the highest GPA in their class.

Henry Jackson

4.2610, Football, Lacrosse

Coach Sundberg about Henry: By the time he got to his senior year, Henry was a two-way starter on the football team. I can honestly say I never saw him, in four years, ever give less than his best effort on the football field. And what’s more, we never had to push or motivate him… he just did it. However, most impressively - Henry is a gifted sweeper. I know this because above all of Henry's other gifts - he is a man of humility and integrity who cares deeply about community. These character traits led him to stay behind and clean up our locker room every Friday night — after almost everyone else had gone home. It's these qualities that have led me to firmly believe that, win or lose, Henry Jackson is a winner. Congratulations Henry - your Eagle football family is proud of you.

Coach Boyd: I have had the pleasure of coaching Henry since his freshman year in lacrosse. This past year we discovered that he is a true renaissance man with a deep love of music including participating in band all 4 years. Last season we saw a new side of Henry when he had a female admirer that started coming to all the games and waited patiently after the games to see Hank when he emerged from the locker room. When asked about who his admirer was, Henry turned a deep shade of red, and answered in his deep base voice that it was his girlfriend. So Henry Jackson is Student Athlete of the Year, but he will always be "Romeo" to his lacrosse teammates! Henry- I loved coaching you and watching you play. We can’t wait to see what you will accomplish. Henry Jackson- Scholar Athlete Award winner!

Robyn Tatko

4.296, Cross Country, Skiing, Track & Field

Coach Jager and Coach Hoekstra say this about Robyn: Robyn is a four-year member of our cross country team, a three-year member of track and field, and she also competed on our school's ski team. Through perseverance and dedication, Robyn has developed into a great mid-distance runner. A highlight that comes to mind is when Robyn qualified to run the 800m at Regionals last season. She approached the Regional race with confidence and determination and set a huge PR as a result. Robyn’s positive attitude, work ethic, and persistence will take her far as she joins older sister Ava on Calvin University’s cross country and track teams. Robyn is the middle of three Tatko girls to run at GRCHS and will be missed.

Coach Mencarelli: Robyn was part of both our high school and middle school program.  Her hard work and dedication were an awesome example for all members of the team.  She was/is always positive, happy, and willing to step in to help anytime it was needed.  She entered her freshman year on the JV team and rose the ranks of our program, eventually receiving all-conference honors as a senior.  She played a pivotal role in helping lead the Eagles to their first conference championship!  As a testament to her commitment to her education, Robyn received academic all-state honors from the Michigan High School Ski Coaches Association in both her junior and senior years.  While we will also miss Robyn, we are very proud of both the skier and the person Robyn has become, and we are excited for her as she moves on to her next chapter at Calvin University!
