We are so thankful for Ken and Arlene VanWoerkom and their volunteer photography for Eagle football!Ken’s Journey with Football and CoachingKen’s love for football began in the early 1960s when he played at Grand Haven High School. As a senior, he earned a starting tackle position, sparking a lifelong passion for the sport. Years later, while supporting his son Jonathan’s football journey at Grand Rapids Christian, Ken was invited to coach the 78ers program. Though initially unsure, encouragement from his son and varsity coach John Butler led him to accept. Alongside his brother Jim, Ken coached kids for 10 years, teaching the wing-T offense and supporting the program’s growth. MHSAA Announces 2025-2026 School Year Classifications
Classifications for Michigan High School Athletic Association elections and postseason tournaments for the 2025-26 school year have been announced.Classifications for the upcoming school year are based on a second semester count date, which for MHSAA purposes was Feb. 12. The enrollment figure submitted for athletic classification purposes may be different from the count submitted for school aid purposes, as it does not include students ineligible for athletic competition because they reached their 19th birthday prior to Sept. 1 of the current school year and will not include alternative education students if none are allowed athletic eligibility by the local school district.All sports’ tournaments are conducted with schools assigned to equal or nearly equal divisions, with lines dependent on how many schools participate in those respective sports.For 2025-26, there are 754 tournament-qualified member schools. Boys Varsity FootballEntering the District Final game against the undefeated Portland Raiders, GRC knew itwould be a tall task. Throughout the first half, the Eagles’ offense was unable to stringenough successful plays together to punch through the Raiders’ defense. Portland,however, paid off their drives with touchdowns and took a 28-0 lead into halftime.Looking to flip the momentum to start the second half, GRC took the ball all the waydown the field using powerful running from Breckton Meeuwsen and Charlie King, andpassing from King to multiple receivers, including an incredible leaping fourth-downcatch by Brieon Walton! Girls Varsity VolleyballThe Grand Rapids Christian Eagles hosted the South Christian Sailors for the District Final and came out on top after an intense, hard-fought match between two top-ranked teams.The Eagles took some time to find their rhythm in the opening set, ultimately falling 15–25 after a few untimely errors. But in the second set, they rallied with grit and determination. Playing clean, disciplined volleyball, the Eagles dominated long rallies and served flawlessly, finishing with 100% serving efficiency. The game could hardlyhave started worse for the visiting Eagles. After receiving the opening kickoff andmoving the ball to midfield, an Eagles’ fumble gave the Beavers the ball, and theymarched in for a TD to take the lead. Boys Varsity Cross CountryThe weather was perfect for racing, the competition was great, and the Eagles cross country team ran one of their best races of the season to finish in 5th place in the Division 2 State Finals at the Michigan International Speedway (MIS) on Saturday.The plan was clear: stay cool and collected early. This patient approach saw the Eagles positioned in 11th place at the 1-mile mark. But unlike many teams that fade during the race, the Eagles only grew stronger. They charged into the second half of the race, moving up to 8th place by the 2-mile split. The final 1.1 miles were legendary. Boys Varsity Cross CountryThe Eagles boys cross country team punched their ticket to the State Finals on a cold, frosty but ultimately sunny Saturday at South Christian, securing a second-place finish at the Regional meet. The team's success was spearheaded by great runs from Ashton Fink and Sean Ryan, who both earned All-Regional recognition by finishing strong in 4th and 5th place, respectively. The next four runners finished in close proximity to lock down the critical second-place spot. Elias DeJong crossed the line in 18th, followed closely by Micah Small (20th), Isaiah Lindstrom (23rd), and James Scholten-Holcomb (24th).In the Post Regional Open Meet (PROM), the JV squad continued a solid day by grabbing a 3rd place finish as a team. Girls Varsity Cross CountryThe air was brisk, and the grass was crispy with frost when the Eagles arrived at South Christian early Saturday morning. Despite these cold conditions, the girls' cross country team thawed out enough to secure a second-place Regional finish and punch their ticket to the State Finals. The team secured its state qualification by placing four runners in the top eight. These four Eagles earned All-Region accolades: Lilah Poel led the team in 5th place. She was followed by Zoe Hoekstra (6th), Lucy Waalkes (7th), and Eva Lindstrom (8th).The incredible depth of the program was on full display in the Post Regional Open Meet (PROM). Girls Freshman VolleyballThe GRC freshmen volleyball team closed out their season in impressive fashion, defeating East Grand Rapids in straight sets, 25–19 and 25–21.Chloe Helder led the charge offensively with 6 kills and 4 blocks, while Maddie Postma added 4 strong kills of her own. Setter Avery Warren was outstanding, tallying 13 assists and 6 aces, plus a dig and a kill to round out her stat line. Defensively, Sophie Plantinga steadied the back row with 6 digs, helping to keep the Eagles in control throughout the match.It was a fitting end to a remarkable season. The coaches are incredibly proud of how much each player has grown: individually and as a team over the course of the year.

In our final dual meet of the year, the team delivered a series of impressive races and great dives, securing a 123–63 victory. Boys Varsity FootballGR Christian 31 – Wayland Union 21The Eagles traveled to Wayland looking to boost their playoff chances and spoil the Wildcats’ Senior Night, and they did just that with a 31–21 victory. GRC struck first after Ty Damstra recovered a fumble, setting up Charlie King’s 22-yard TD pass to Justin Davis. Wayland tied it, but a 28-yard Easton Howe field goal gave GRC a 10–7 lead. After another Wildcat score, a 53-yard kickoff return by Breckton Meeuwsen set up a 39-yard TD pass from King to Elden Grover, giving the Eagles a 17–14 halftime edge. A Brieon Walton interception ended Wayland’s late drive.In the second half, GRC’s offense took control. Meeuwsen capped a long drive with a 17-yard run and a 19-yard TD catch to make it 24–14. Girls Freshman Volleyball Dominates at Rockford
Girls Freshman VolleyballThe Grand Rapids Christian freshman volleyball team had a strong showing at the Rockford Tournament on Saturday, finishing the day with a 3–1 record. The Eagles swept both Caledonia and West Ottawa in straight sets, outlasted Jenison in an intense three-set thriller, and dropped only one match to a tough Hudsonville squad.Ava Worst led the attack with 14 kills, while Chloe Helder and Maddie Postma each tallied 13. Helder added three blocks: one sealing a game-winning point and Postma contributed a block and two aces. Setter duo Avery Warren and Oakleigh Visker commanded the offense beautifully; Warren totaled 25 assists, six kills, three aces, and a block, while Visker dished out 15 assists and fired off five aces.Defensively, Aleigha VanStee led the back row with 11 digs and three aces, followed by Genevieve Lewis with nine digs and Claire Waelke with six digs and a three-ace serving run to close out a match. Girls Junior Varsity VolleyballThe GRC JV Eagles traveled to Grand Haven this weekend to compete in the Grand Haven Lake Shore Classic, facing off against some of the biggest and most competitive programs on the west side of the state.Placed in a strong pool with Coopersville, Reeths-Puffer, and host school Grand Haven, the Eagles entered as the second-ranked team, and wasted no time proving they belonged at the top.The team kicked off the tournament with a dominant 2-0 win over Reeths-Puffer (25-17, 25-12), playing crisp, disciplined volleyball to secure a confident start. Following a long break, they returned to sweep Coopersville 2-0 in another impressive performance. After Wayland scored on their opening possession, GRC answered with two 30+ yard completions from Bradley Nuiver to Cooper Brisbane, driving inside the 5-yard line before a fumble ended the threat. The defense responded with a key fourth-down sack by Jacob Bierling, setting up a 22-yard TD pass from Nuiver to Brisbane. A conversion to Wyatt Stuit gave the Eagles an 8–7 lead, but Wayland added a late score to lead 13–8 at halftime.The second half was marred by turnovers that gave Wayland short fields, and the Wildcats capitalized. Girls Freshman VolleyballThe freshmen Eagles had an exciting night of volleyball, defeating Ottawa Hills in straight sets (25–13, 25–6) before falling just short in a tight three-set rematch against Forest Hills Northern.Against Ottawa Hills, the Eagles dominated from start to finish, serving tough and attacking relentlessly. In the second match, the team rallied energetically in the second set to force a deciding third, ultimately falling 15–12 but showing tremendous teamwork.Chloe Helder was strong at the net with 5 kills and 4 blocks, while Maddie Postma led the attack with 11 kills, 5 blocks, and an ace. Boys Varsity SoccerThe Eagles season came to an end on Wednesday night after a shoot-out loss to East Grand Rapids in the district final. The Pioneers would score first when an errant clearance fell to the foot of an opposing player right in front of goal. The Eagles would respond when William Bush was tripped up in the box, leading to a penalty kick goal from Liam Jansen, who was celebrating his 17th birthday on the night. From there, the defenses would own the night with no further goals as the match was decided by spot-kicks. The Eagles received goals in the shootout from Max Visser, Liam Jansen, Will VandenBerg, Frieder Breithaupt, and Will Gruennert. Despite two fantastic saves from Josh Dykema during the PKs, the Eagles were not able to pull-out a victory. The Eagles end their season with a 9-6-4 record.
