We are so thankful for Ken and Arlene VanWoerkom and their volunteer photography for Eagle football!Ken’s Journey with Football and CoachingKen’s love for football began in the early 1960s when he played at Grand Haven High School. As a senior, he earned a starting tackle position, sparking a lifelong passion for the sport. Years later, while supporting his son Jonathan’s football journey at Grand Rapids Christian, Ken was invited to coach the 78ers program. Though initially unsure, encouragement from his son and varsity coach John Butler led him to accept. Alongside his brother Jim, Ken coached kids for 10 years, teaching the wing-T offense and supporting the program’s growth. Boys Varsity WrestlingThe Eagle Wrestlers started their season with duals against Ottawa Hills and Wyoming Lee. The wrestlers started the night with a 47-36 win over Ottawa Hills. Isaac Sung's 30 second fall was the fastest of the dual. Other Eagle winners were Matthew Hinsch, Ari Gray, Caleb Bylsma, Jayden Wierenga, Joshua Bawi, Parker Will and Caleb Pugh.The second dual of the evening was against Wyoming Lee. The Eagles defeated Lee 60-18. Daniel Hinsch had the fastest pin with a 22 second fall. Other winners were Caleb Bylsma, Jayden Wierenga, Isaac Sung, Joshua Bawi, Isaac James, Parker Will, Zac Buter, Josiah Gurley and Caleb Pugh.The Eagles travel to St Ignace this weekend for an individual tournament.

Girls Varsity VolleyballGrand Rapids Christian Volleyball concluded an outstanding season under the lights of Kellogg Arena on Friday, battling #1-ranked Detroit Country Day in a hard-fought State Semifinal.The Eagles opened the match with confidence and control, taking the first set 25–18. From there, each set became a test of grit and heart, with GRC pushing the top-ranked Yellow Jackets to extra points in nearly every set before ultimately falling 28–30, 23–25, and 24–26.The road to Kellogg Arena was one of the toughest postseason paths in the state. FridayThe 200 Medley Relay charged into finals, claiming 13th place with a team of Juliana Mills, Elizabeth Doezema, Veda Harkness, Maeve Harkness. In the 50 Freestyle, Maeve Harkness blasted her way into finals, finishing in 9th place. Emily Setlock lit up the pool deck—dancing, fidgeting, and then delivering a beautifully vertical 303 (no arms!) to secure 6th place on Friday night. Boys Varsity Ice HockeyThe Eagles traveled to Muskegon last night to face Reeths-Puffer, a team that has given the Eagles trouble over the past few years. The start was far from ideal, as the Eagles surrendered a goal just six seconds into the game off the opening faceoff.They responded quickly, though, with a goal from Theo Partridge, who broke down the left side and beat the goalie five-hole. Sam DeYoung and Jayden Rockwell picked up the assists. Reeths-Puffer regained the lead with three minutes left in the period, but with 21 seconds remaining, Grahm Bien buried the equalizer. Boys Varsity Ice HockeyThe hockey team opened its season last night against West Ottawa. While not the result they were looking for, they definitely have learned some areas that they need to improve on, quickly. In the first period the Panthers took the lead with 3 unanswered goals. In the second the Eagles came out and competed much better scoring to cut the lead to 3-1. Theo Partridge scored the first goal of the season, after banging in his own rebound for the Eagles, while Carter Dalquist and Grahm Behen drew assists on the goal. The Panthers responded late in the second, scoring on a half breakaway to regain the 3 goal lead. In the third, Cash Laufer scored with assists going to Partridge and Sam DeYoung cutting the lead back to 2. It didn't last as the Panthers scored twice to make it 6-2. Boys Varsity FootballEntering the District Final game against the undefeated Portland Raiders, GRC knew itwould be a tall task. Throughout the first half, the Eagles’ offense was unable to stringenough successful plays together to punch through the Raiders’ defense. The game could hardlyhave started worse for the visiting Eagles. After receiving the opening kickoff andmoving the ball to midfield, an Eagles’ fumble gave the Beavers the ball, and theymarched in for a TD to take the lead. Boys Varsity Cross CountryThe weather was perfect for racing, the competition was great, and the Eagles cross country team ran one of their best races of the season to finish in 5th place in the Division 2 State Finals at the Michigan International Speedway (MIS) on Saturday.The plan was clear: stay cool and collected early. This patient approach saw the Eagles positioned in 11th place at the 1-mile mark. But unlike many teams that fade during the race, the Eagles only grew stronger. They charged into the second half of the race, moving up to 8th place by the 2-mile split. The final 1.1 miles were legendary. The boys continued their surge, digging deep to pick off three additional teams, culminating in a phenomenal 5th-place team finish.The team’s success was fueled by Ashton’s and Sean’s sensational performances at the front of the pack, both of which earned coveted All-State honors (awarded to the top 30 finishers). Boys Varsity FootballFor the final regular-season game of the year, the Eagles traveled to Holland Christianto play the Maroons. Holland Christian, fighting for a playoff spot, started very strong,and raced to a three-touchdown lead through the first half: 21-0 Maroons.The Eagle Offense found its footing to start the third quarter and, behind strong runningfrom Breckton Meeuwsen, moved down close. Charlie King ran it in from 7 yards outand King found Nate Larson for the conversion to cut the HC lead to 21-8. HollandChristian wasn’t going to be denied on this night and scored two more touchdownsbefore the Eagles would strike again. Boys Varsity Cross CountryThe Eagles boys cross country team punched their ticket to the State Finals on a cold, frosty but ultimately sunny Saturday at South Christian, securing a second-place finish at the Regional meet. The team's success was spearheaded by great runs from Ashton Fink and Sean Ryan, who both earned All-Regional recognition by finishing strong in 4th and 5th place, respectively. The next four runners finished in close proximity to lock down the critical second-place spot. Elias DeJong crossed the line in 18th, followed closely by Micah Small (20th), Isaiah Lindstrom (23rd), and James Scholten-Holcomb (24th).In the Post Regional Open Meet (PROM), the JV squad continued a solid day by grabbing a 3rd place finish as a team. Jonathan Falk ran a truly inspired race, finishing 3rd individually to lead the charge. Girls Varsity Cross Country Qualifies for the State Finals
Girls Varsity Cross CountryThe air was brisk, and the grass was crispy with frost when the Eagles arrived at South Christian early Saturday morning. Despite these cold conditions, the girls' cross country team thawed out enough to secure a second-place Regional finish and punch their ticket to the State Finals. The team secured its state qualification by placing four runners in the top eight. These four Eagles earned All-Region accolades: Lilah Poel led the team in 5th place. She was followed by Zoe Hoekstra (6th), Lucy Waalkes (7th), and Eva Lindstrom (8th).The incredible depth of the program was on full display in the Post Regional Open Meet (PROM). The Eagles dominated the PROM by sweeping the first five spots! Joy Van Wyk took the overall victory in the open race, clocking a time that would have placed her 12th in the varsity field.
