Over 100 football and basketball officials have retired/resigned in the West Michigan area just this year. In addition, the girls and boys basketball schedule is compacted such that they are playing 3 days a week. Officials have gone from officiating 2 days a week to 5 and sometimes 6 days a week, with multiple games on each night.
The number of high school athletics officials is becoming such that Freshman and JV games in a variety of sports may need to be officiated by coaches.
The MHSAA needs more officials. Why should you consider be an MHSAA official? Ace Corey has been officiating for 15 year and this is what he had to say:
- It’s a great way to give back to the game that gave so much to me.
- I get to be a part of a team.
- It’s great for my physical health.
- It’s the best seat in the house.
- It’s great to work with kids and see their joy in what they are passionate about.
