Last week we honored a longtime member of the Eagles basketball program for his many years of service to our school in his work as a scorekeeper and basketball official.  

John began his involvement in basketball as a seventh-grade player, played three years at Grand Rapids Christian, and a year at Grand Rapids Junior College, now known as GRCC. John led the Eagles to City League co-championships in his junior and senior seasons, and led his team to the Regional Finals in his senior year. At GRJC, he was named the team MVP in his freshman year.

John stayed involved in basketball by taking up officiating, something he did at the high school and small college levels for 23 years. In 1985, he was named the high school official of the year. He also served as the registrar of the West Michigan Officials Association for twelve years.

John has been a scorekeeper for all levels of boys and girls basketball at Grand Rapids Christian for 29 years, working at more than 1,500 games. As a player and scorekeeper, John has been involved in basketball for over 70 years. John says that his favorite memories as a scorekeeper for the Eagles were the 1997 Girls State Championship Game and the 2018 Boys Runner-Up Game.

We are grateful to his wife, Jerri, for her support of John over the years of his involvement with Eagle basketball. John has also appreciated the support of his daughters Debbie and Jodie over the course of his career.
