VanderKamp, Dick (2014)

Dick graduated Timothy Christian in 1964 and then Calvin College in 1971.  In 1971, Dick began his career at Grand Rapids Christian Schools as a teacher at Oakdale Christian, transferred to the high school as athletic director from 2001-2003 and currently serves as facility and event coordinator.

Coach VanderKamp first worked as an assistant football coach from 1970-1984 and started JV baseball in 1978 and then led the varsity baseball team from 1979-2001. His accomplishments include 3 city league titles, 7 district championships, 1 regional championship and a state semi-final appearance.

Kamp’s record of 357-244 is exceptional, as are the 3 professional, 6 Division-1, and 15 Division-3 athletes he coached, but his real accomplishment shines in the 368 players he mentored, most of whom he still keeps in touch.

While athletic director Dick implemented many new programs including middle school cross country, cheer, and youth football.

Coach Kamp’s peers selected him as the district and regional Coach of the Year in 1984 and in 1995 he was selected as the head coach for the Annual East-West All-Star Game. In 2011, Dick was inducted into the MHSBCA Hall of Fame and his plaque is on display at Comerica Park.

Dick leaves a legacy as one of the most loyal, hardworking Eagles ever. His passionate support at games and greeting of guests at all our venues sets him apart as a most beloved figure here at GR Christian High.

“No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it.”
I Corinthians 10:13
