Vos Brasser, Cathie (2017)
Cathie Vos Brasser excelled in basketball and track in high school and went on to an outstanding career as a college basketball player. A 1988 alumna of GRCH, Cathie has deep roots as an Eagle: she and husband Bruce have three of four parents who are also GRCH graduates, as well as all of their siblings.
A three-year Eagle varsity player in basketball, Cathie was named to the All-City League Team in each of those years. She was selected as an All-State player in her junior and senior seasons, and in her senior year was chosen to be a member of the Detroit Free Press Dream Team and was runner-up for the honor of Miss Basketball in the state of Michigan.
Cathie held several individual girls basketball records. Her scoring record lasted for about 20 years until it was broken by a 4-year varsity player. Cathie was voted by her teammates as the team MVP in her junior and senior seasons.
In track and field, Cathie participated in several events in each meet, and was named the team’s MVP in her junior and senior seasons. Two of her records still stand: her high jump record of 5‘ 6 3/4“, and the record of 50.3 seconds set by her 400-meter relay team. As a result of her performances at the State Track Meets, Cathie earned All-State recognition in the high jump, long jump, and 440-meter relay.
As a senior, Cathie was voted by the GRCH coaches as the Eagle Award winner, awarded to the best female scholar-athlete. Beyond her recognition on the local and state level, Cathie was honored by USA Today as the National High School Female Athlete of the Year for 1988. Even more important to Cathie was her selection by the Officials Association for the Sportsmanship Award in the state of Michigan. In her own words, “I thought that was cool!” Cathie’s favorite high school memories include the friendships formed on her teams and the time spent hanging out with them.
Cathie accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Western Michigan University, where she was named the “Freshman of the Year” in the MidAmerican Conference. She played for two years at Western before moving on to the University of Delaware, where she graduated in 1993.
Cathie married her high school sweetheart Bruce Brasser, and all three of their children are Eagles, too. Daughter Jessica is a 2014 GRCH grad currently attending Calvin College, and sons Ben and Sam are a senior and sophomore, respectively. Cathie has enjoyed her career as a stay-at-home Mom, and has been writing Bible studies, meditations, and short devotionals, some of which have been published.
