									Claus Beukema

Beukema, Claus (2022)

Claus Beukema (1906-1993) graduated from GRCH in 1924. He earned a BA degree from Calvin College in 1928, then went on to the University of Michigan where he received a master’s degree in mathematics and chemistry. He later returned to U of M and earned still another degree in Guidance and Counseling so that he could assist returning World War II veterans as they attempted to resume their education.

Claus’ first teaching assignment was at West Side Christian School where he spent one year. He then moved on to GRCH, where he taught mathematics, chemistry, and mechanical drawing over the next 20 years. He often tutored students at his home at night. In addition to teaching, Claus was the school registrar, developing the teaching schedules and individual schedules for students. In the pre-computer age, this took up a large amount of his time in the summer. During WWII, from 1940-1945, Claus served as the Assistant Director of Camp Roger.

Claus’ basketball coaching career at GRCH spanned 11 seasons (1935-1946). His teams had success at a level achieved by few. When GRCH joined the City League in 1938, the Eagles won the league championship the next two seasons and then again in the 1943-44 season. In postseason play, the Eagles won eight consecutive district championships (1937-1944) and six consecutive regional championships (1938-1944). There was no regional championship in 1943 due to WWII.

Claus’ team of 1938 captured the MHSAA State Championship, with the championship game being played in the Civic Auditorium in downtown Grand Rapids. This was the first state championship won by GRCH in any sport. A highlight of that game was the presentation of the championship trophy to the Eagles by Dr. James Naismith, the creator of the game of basketball. Coach Beukema’s Eagle team of 1939 nearly duplicated the feat of winning the state championship, losing in the state championship game by one point.

Claus always appreciated the efforts and dedication of his players. He enjoyed working with them and valued their enthusiasm and teamwork. Many of his players stayed in touch with him long after graduation.

Claus made a major career change in 1949, first selling real estate for 1-2 years. He then began working for Daverman Associates (architects) as their Educational Consultant.

Claus’ hobbies included stamp collecting, listening to classical music, and growing flowers (especially roses). Faithful in his Bible reading and prayer, Claus was a role model and inspiration to family and friends. He was a very active member of Neland Avenue Christian Reformed Church, serving as deacon, elder, and on many committees.

Claus and his wife, Harriet, had two daughters, Ruth Beukema Machiele and Phyllis Beukema DeVries. The Beukema family is blessed with Claus and Harriet’s 5 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Claus’ Favorite Scripture: Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,
“plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.”
