The undefeated East Grand Rapids Pioneers came to Eagle Stadium to take on the undefeated Eagles Thursday evening. The match-up of these local rivals was for the lead in the OK White Conference and for the annual Memorial Cup. The teams battled throughout the first half of the match creating chances in end-to-end action. Sr. goalkeeper Anton Dershem turned away several scoring chances in the first half to keep the score 0-0. Late in the first half, the Pioneers drew a penalty kick against the Eagles. Dershem faced down the Pioneers shooter and got just enough of a fingertip on the ball do push it off the post.
The Eagles came out flying in the start of the 2nd half. Just a minute past halftime, Jr. Nick Cassiday drew a penalty kick after beating a Pioneer defender and being fouled in the penalty box. Cassiday stepped up and converted, making it 1-0. The Eagles settled the play and continued to press. Midway through the 2nd half, Cassiday struck again, surprising the Pioneer goalkeeper with a low shot to make the score 2-0. The Pioneers pressed forward trying to get a goal back into the game in the waning minutes, but the Eagles were able to spring a ball forward to Jr. Ben Kuiper who went in 1 on 1 with the Pioneer goalkeerper and tucked the ball neatly inside the far post with just a minute remaining to seal a 3-0 win for the Eagles.
The Eagles enter their last regular season OK White match with Lowell with a 6-0 conference record and the opportunity to clinch the OK White regular season title on Tuesday night (Senior night) at Eagle Stadium. The game will be streamed on Facebook Live.
