v Gull Lake
The Varsity Eagles opened the 2024 season by hosting two perennially strong opponents. In the first match the Eagles took on Gull Lake. After a first half where both teams took some time to find their footing, the Eagles found some rhythm and space to attack in the second period. It didn’t take long for the hosts to open the scoring when Peter Borst calmly slotted one past the keeper after being played through off a slick pass from Seth Rozema. Emmett Vance would add to the lead with a well placed free kick not long after. Borst would later find the back of the net once again with an assist from John Cassiday to give the hosts a 3-0 lead. Will Bufalini earned the clean sheet in goal.
v Holland
In the second match, the Eagles would strike early with Seth Rozema showing composure in front of goal as he slipped one past the keeper to the far post after a pass from Peter Borst. The Eagles displayed an ambition to attack early in this match and Emmett Vance would tally another mark on the scoresheet from his second set piece goal on the day. The Dutch from Holland, however, were able to ask some questions of the Eagle defense as Soren White was called on to deny a potential breakaway by poking the ball away from an attacker at the last moment. Josh Dykema was also called on to palm away a lofted deflection that was destined for the back of the Eagles’ net. The half would end 2-0.
The second half would settle down as both teams began to tire in the warm and humid conditions. John Cassiday provided the insurance goal the Eagles were looking for with an Olympico, a goal scored directly off a corner kick. The Eagles would see the match out well and record another 3-0 victory on the day. Josh Dykema earned the clean sheet in goal and the defensive unit of Soren White, Graham deJonge, Isaac Williams, Max Michael, Will VandenBerg, and a few others contributed greatly to holding our opponents scoreless.
The Eagles are back at it on Tuesday when they visit Byron Center for a 6:30 match. This match will be played at Byron Center West Athletic Complex.
