The Varsity Eagles hosted the Plainwell Trojans in the district semifinal on a cool night for soccer at Eagle Stadium. The Eagles started on the front foot pressuring the visitors and creating multiple corner kicks and half-chances. The pressure finally paid off when Liam Jansen smashed one home under the goalkeeper to give the Eagles a deserved 1-0 advantage. Despite some nervy moments late in the first half for the hosts, the first half would end 1-0.
The second half featured more of the same as the Eagles continued their high press in the opponent's half. The Eagles would add to the lead when John Cassiday found fellow senior Peter Borst with a nifty ball that Borst finished at the far post to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. However, just minutes later, the visitors would pull one back with a stunner to the upper corner off an Eagle giveaway in their defensive third. Resolved to avoid what can be frenetic last minutes in a one-goal game, the Eagles kept pushing forward and earned a PK when Boris Lalic held off a defender near the end line and earned the spot kick after being fouled. Cassiday would step up and make no mistake as he fired home the PK and restored the Eagles' two goal advantage to make it 3-1. Lalic would add to the lead with a fantastic solo effort as he laced a left-footed blast to the far right corner to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead. The defensive unit would see out the match well and send the Eagles to the district final vs. South Christian on Saturday at 1pm at Eagle Stadium.
Go Eagles!
