The GRC Varsity girls tennis team had a busy weekend. On Friday they competed in their conference tournament and on Saturday they faced Division 3 regional opponent ranked #7 in the state, FHE. At the conference tournament, the Eagles finished in 3rd place! Here are the team point results:

1.FHC 59 pts
2. FHN 57 pts
3. GRC 41 pts
4. EGR 40 pts
5. BC 39 pts

It took a team effort and every victory and point to beat EGR by 1 point and BC by 2. The Eagles are very happy about this finish and close out to the conference schedule. Congrats to #4 singles, Avah Jerke for being our one conference champion!! Here are the finishes by flight:

1S Anwen Amash finishes in 5th place and wins consolation bracket. Anwen subbed in for Natalie and saying she exceeded expectations is an understatement. Anwen played a seeded BC player very well taking 4 games off of her in the 2nd set and followed that up with two victories and going 2-1 on the day. We are very proud of Anwen.

2S Alex Vermeulen finishes in 4th place. Alex came off a long testing day at school and still played some amazing tennis and competing really well against FHC and EGR in losses.

3s Kaitlyn Schmitt finishes in 3rd place. Kaitlyn played some really good tennis, getting a better score against FHC her second time around and getting revenge on a BC player that she previously lost to, to get 3rd place.

4s Avah Jerke finishes in 1st place. Avah dominated this tournament. She never lost a set, beat an FHC opponent she hadn't played yet, and got revenge against BC. Congratulations Avah!

1d Frankie Volkema/Anna Jacobsen finishes 6th place. These girls played well and got revenge from an earlier loss in the season as well and went 1-2 on the day.

2d Betta Klein/Gwyn Artz finishes in 4th place. They both played FHC very well the 2nd time around and had a good tournament.

3d Rachel Larsen/Lucy VanDrunen finishes in 3rd place. These girls played in arguably the match of the day against FHC to where they lost a close heart breaker in 10 point tie break in the 3rd set. They improved so much against this team the 2nd time around and they made sure to go take care of business against BC to finish in 3rd.

4d Charline Dahu/Anneka Vermeulen finishes in 5th place and wins consolation bracket. They drew a tough FHN team 1st round but proceeded to take care of business against their next two opponents.

5d Adelyn Breuninger/Johanna Bos finishes 2nd place. They played really good tennis and beat a good FHN team to make it to the championship and played a very strong BC team in the championship and played them well.

6d Jori Koons/Emily Vandenberge finishes 5th place and wins the consolation bracket. After played a good first match and coming away with a close loss, these girls proceeded to take care of business and win the next two matches.

Now to our dual match against FHE. The Eagles ended up taking away the 4-3 team victory and secure their spot as ranked #5 in the state. This was a big win for GRC since FHE is in their regional Thursday. Especially coming off a long day Friday, the team found the grit and energy to still show up and play their hearts out. We are very proud of the team. Here are the results:

1s Johanna Bos loses 8-7. Johanna played very good singles tennis and this match had a lot of good points and were very back and forth. She lost in a close tie break but we are proud of her performance, especially with everyone watching at the end.

2s Alex Vermeulen loses 1-6, 3-6

3s Kaitlyn Schmitt wins 7-5, 6-4

4s Avah Jerke wins 6-4, 6-4

1D Frankie Volkema/Anna Jacobsen loses 2-6, 0-6.

2D Betta Klein/Gwyn Artz loses 4-6, 5-7. These two girls played their hearts out and were battling the whole match. Down 2-5 in the 2nd set they battled back to make it 5-5 and then lost the next game in a back and forth deuce battle. I was proud of these girls grit.

3d Rachel Larsen/Lucy VanDrunen wins 6-2, 6-0. These girls won in dominated fashioning and were first off the court.

4d Charline Dahu/Anneka Vermeulen wins 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Once these girls found a good strategy and turned it in on in the 2nd set, there was no looking back as they made a great comeback to win this match.

5s Emily Vandenberge wins 8-5. Emily started off down 2-3 in the set and proceeded to make really good adjustments and have a very strong mental game to come back and win almost every game there on out and played some really good singles tennis.

The Eagles have their playoff regional tennis tournament on Thursday that starts @ 8:30am in Portland and Ionia. This tournament will be what determines who makes it to the state finals in Kalamazoo or not. Come out and support your Eagles try and qualify for states if you have time. Go Eagles!!
