FOREST HILLS CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL: 21
The 2020 campaign for the GR Christian football team began with a hard fought battle against Forest Hills Central. Coming off a strong season last year, the surging Ranger program overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the Eagles 21-13 on Friday night.
Wth a shortened lead-up time to the first contest under first year co-head coaches Rueben Riley and Kirk Sundberg, the Eagle players fought well and laid a solid foundation to build on for the remainder of the year. With a stingy defense and athletic playmakers on offense, there is much to be hopeful about for the future of this team.
Strong performances were turned in by wide receiver Marcellus VanderKodde (3 catches for 73 yards and a touchdown), while Brian Hunter chipped in three catches of his own. Quarterback Derrek Dykema threw for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Eagle defense was paced by linebackers CJ Jones and Aidan Bremer who patrol the field with speed and physicality.
Eager to get better, the Eagles will be back in action this Friday against a very strong Byron Center team for the home opener at Eagle Stadium.
