Grand Rapids Christian Eagles lost to Forest Hills Central Varsity Rangers 21-17 on Wednesday, unable to capitalize on defensive opportunities.
Grand Rapids Christian took an early lead in the first with a two-run single by Ellie VandeGriend and a two-run triple by Maren Leech. In the fourth, they pushed ahead 11-8 with help from an error, Greta Holman RBI double, and a two-run homer by Jaslene McWilliams. They tied the game again in the fifth with RBI hits from VandeGriend, McWilliams, and Karina Mora. Forest Hills Central sealed the win with a five-run rally in the seventh.
Rae Cummings stepped in the circle first for the Eagles. Cummings surrendered 12 hits and 11 runs (nine earned) over three and one-third innings, striking out four and walking one. Reese Mersman came in for a change of pace and went three and two-thirds innings, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on eight hits, striking out three and walking six.
The Eagles collected 19 hits in the game. McWilliams led the team with 4 hits, 2 singles, a double, and a homerun to drive in 3 runs. VandeGriend and Leech each drove in three runs, off of three hits each. Alexis Willis, Mora, Holman, and Cummings each collected two hits for the Eagles and Keira Porte had one hit.
