The Eagles JV girls lacrosse team had a phenomenal home opener against Forest Hills Northern Saturday morning, winning 9-7. While the temperature was chilly outside, the team came out hot. Liz Nienhuis started the Eagles off with their first goal, and Brooklyn Vandyke kept the run going with the team’s second. This season, the team is made up of players from both Grand Rapids Christian and Unity Christian, but no spectator would be able to tell. The girls worked as a unit to defend their goal and to find the opponent’s net often. Esther King was a standout goalie, making five saves in the first quarter alone and ending with ten. Throughout the game, ball possession was obviously essential, and the team worked hard for every 50-50 ball, and Jordyn Vanderzwaag came out with four ground balls. Eva Lindstrom came out with three, and Rylee Anderson, Brooklyn Vandyke, and Lucy DeBoer came out with two each. The Eagles were successful on the draw, and Sophia DeHoop made a huge impact on the circle, obtaining 5 draw controls throughout the game. Rylee Anderson and Eva Lindstrom also fought hard on the circle, each coming away with three draw controls as well. Rylee and Eva also found the back of the net. Rylee scored six goals and Eva scored one. Eva and Hannah Mockabee also helped their teammates by obtaining one assist each. This was a great first win for the team, and we are excited to play Hudsonville on Wednesday.
