The JV Eagles lacrosse team played Grandville Saturday morning, and while it was an early game, the girls took the field with energy, effort, and enthusiasm, helping them to win 11-5, bringing them to a 3-0 record.
The girls have been working hard on winning every ground ball and increasing ball movement, and it most definitely showed on Saturday morning. Brooklyn Vandyke scored quickly in the first quarter, setting the scene for the rest of the game. She scored again later in the quarter, as well. Jordyn VanderZwaag scored two goals and assisted once, as did Sophia DeHoop. Rylee Anderson scored three goals, one of them being an impressive behind-the-back shot, which took the goalie (and everybody else) by surprise. Neve Winstanley and Noive Saiz Pando also scored one apiece, and Mikayla Wolters assisted once.
Eva Lindstrom was a top-notch goalie once again, totalling 11 saves throughout the game. She blocked many shots with the help of her defenders. However, before the ball could even get to Eva, there were many ground ball pick-ups. Myah Alkema and Neve Winstanley each picked up three, Liz Nienhuis picked up two, and Lucy Deboer, Haley Zuidema, and Mikayla Wolters each picked up one, making great contributions to the game.
Lastly, the girls fought hard on the circle to obtain ball possession immediately. They found much success, and Sophia DeHoop stood out, obtaining six draw controls - 75% of the teams draw controls in total. With Sophia’s help, the Eagles were able to obtain the ball right away, and focus on getting the ball into the back of Grandville’s net. Neve Winstanley and Lucy Deboer also obtained one draw control each.
The Eagles are excited for a bit of rest so they can be ready to take on Portage Northern on April 14th.
