The Varsity Eagles Soccer Team hosted East Grand Rapids in the District Championship match at Eagle Stadium on Thursday night. With both teams coming off of semi-final victories, this game was a rematch of a 4-4 draw earlier in the season. 

The game started with a high pace of play as both teams brought the energy of the evening to the field. The Eagles created some early chances and got on the board 13-minutes into the match when a shot from senior Grant Hassenrik was deflected and bounced off the crossbar of the EGR goal where fellow senior Hans Pruis was in position to pound it into the net to take an early lead. The Eagles continued to create chances, but were unable to convert, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime. 

The Eagles struck again early in the 2nd half as senior Ben Kuiper intercepted a loose ball and floated it to the far post where junior Ian Velzen-Haner ran in to volley the ball into the EGR net, doubling the Eagles lead to 2-0. Both the Eagle and East battled to control the midfield with the Eagles creating more attacking opportunities as the game progressed. 

With the 2-0 win, the Eagles were able to lift the District Championship trophy in front of their fans in the last home match of the year. The Eagles no progress to the Regional semi-final against Spring Lake on Tuesday night (5:00 pm) at Cedar Springs HS.
