Eagles Win: 2 - 1
On Wednesday evening, the Grand Rapids Christian Eagles hosted Northview for the second round of the conference tournament after both teams lost their first-round games. This was the second time GRC played Northview this season with a 3-1 result for the Eagles during the first match. Northview got off to a fast start with a goal in the ninth minute coming off a long throw in their offensive third. The Eagles created a lot of opportunities in the first half finding the crossbar a few times, but ultimately the first half ended with GRC trailing 0-1.  The second half started much how the first ended with the Eagles controlling a lot of possession but struggling to find a goal. That changed with less than 20 minutes to play when Stella Sheldon won a ball in the middle of the field, took a few touches and played a beautiful ball past Northview’s back line for Emma VanGoor who found herself 1v1 with the Northview goalie. The goalie came out and VanGoor played it past her on the ground making the game 1-1. GRC kept the pressure on wanting to end the game in regulation and not send it to OT. With less than four minutes to play, Kaitlynn Trook found Kate LaRue on the right side who beat her defender and played a ball into the box. She found teammate Lydia Ydenberg who took one touch, shot and scored for the freshman’s first goal of the season. The Eagles held on for the last four minutes and won 2-1.  The Eagles will travel to Lowell on Friday for a 5:30pm game which will complete the conference tournament. Lowell beat their second-round opponent, Greenville. The Eagles will then be off for a week until next week Friday when they host the first round of the district tournament.

The Eagles had the better of the opportunities seeing a goal flash inches wide by freshman Stella Sheldon, and a few volleys inside the box that were safely handled by the Red Arrows keeper. The second half was a total change. The Eagles started winning all of the 50/50 balls on the ground and out of the air, pinning the visiting team into their own half. The only chance the away team produced was a breakaway that saw Senior Goalkeeper Olivia May save a sure goal at full stretch. The Eagles are back in action next week with games against Forest Hills Central and Byron Center.

She played the ball forward where Julia Timmer beat her defender and put the ball in the back of the net for the first goal in the seventh minute. Just a minute later, Stella Sheldon controlled the ball in the middle of the field and played a ball behind the Northview back four to Emma Van Goor on the left side. Eagles Lose: 0 - 4
The girls soccer teams headed down to the Portage Invitational on Saturday for a hot day of soccer on the turf!  It was an eventful day for the Eagles, with both Varsity and JV teams having two games each.   The Varsity squad kicked off against a very strong Portage Central team in their first game, and although the scoreboard would suggest otherwise, held their own against a formidable opponent.  The Eagles came out with some great possession and the ball was on both sides of the field for most of the game.  The Mustangs opened up the score at the 8-minute mark with an incredible shot from 30 yards out, and they created several chances throughout the first half that keeper Olivia May handled with ease.   The Eagles launched an attack early on in the 2nd half with a great run and pass from Emma VanGoor that set up co-captain Katelyn LaRue with a chance at goal inside the box that was ultimately broken up by the defense.  Portage Central put in a 2nd goal from a beautiful through ball that put their right winger 1-on-1 with Olivia May as she slotted it past.  Despite a solid spell of possession and a couple of chances after being down 2 goals, a breakdown in midfield defense led the Mustangs to another goal 10 minutes later.  Another 10 minutes went on and the Eagles gifted the Mustangs a penalty kick, which they finished.   Although the score wasn't pretty, our team showed well against what will likely be the strongest opponent of the season, ranked D1 #2 in the state.

Eagles Win: 4 - 2
The girls' second game was against Vicksburg, where the Eagles won their 4th game of the season.   The Eagles got a bit of a wake-up call in the 5th minute when a free kick was played directly through the middle and the Bulldog attacker lobbed it over GK Phoebe Craker's head.  But the Eagles fires back within 60 seconds with a goal of their own, built off a through ball from Freshmen Stella Sheldon to Emma VanGoor who crossed it to Julia Timmer for the tap-in from the 6.  Seniors LaRue and Aupperlee linked up on another chance 5 minutes later, to no avail.  More chances came to the Eagles freshmen Sheldon and Lydia Ydenberg, before Sheldon hit one upper 90 from 25 out to give the Eagles the lead.  Yet, the Eagles received another surprise a minute later when another long ball made its way through to their lone forward who managed to get past 3 defenders and slot the ball in the back of the net.   A fire was lit at halftime and the Eagles stepped foot on the field in the 2nd half with a mission to dominate the remainder of the game.  The half opened right away with a great opportunity created off a through ball from Ydenberg to Aupperlee who found Timmer in the box, who just put it over the bar.  After several corners, a couple of shots from defenders Molly Hassenrik and Ava Barton, and an absolute bone crusher off the crossbar from LaRue... the 2nd half scoring opened up with an absolute bender from VanGoor.  To finish it off, on the 9th corner kick of the half, Kaitlynn Trook received a nice little bounce-back ball that she smashed right at the goal to make it 4-2.   A solid performance from the Eagles as we are now in the thick of our season's schedule!

The Huskies quickly fired back with a break away that saw them take a 2-0 lead going into halftime.    The second half changed as the Eagles were not able to gain control of the game and saw the Huskies net 3 more bringing the final to 5-0.    The Eagles are looking to bounce back with a double header Saturday morning at the Portage Invitational.

Eagles Win: 2 - 1
The Eagles took on Catholic Central at a neutral site Monday night. The game saw the first half trade blows with opportunities falling both team’s way. Eagles defenders Ella Wolters, Molly Hassenrik, and Lilah Poel repelled every attack that came their way. First half goalkeeper Olivia May saved a sure goal that was moving towards the top corner to keep things level going into half.   The second half saw a shift in the team’s mentality which started to control even facet of the game. Scoring was opened by Senior Kaitlyn Aupperlee after she finished a great cross from her classmate Emma VanGoor. The Cougars were able to pull one back bringing the game back to a deadlock. Eagles Win: 2 - 0
The Eagles kicked off the Spring 2023 soccer season on Wednesday night against NorthPointe Christian on a mild night for mid-March. At the first whistle, the Eagles were ready to go and quickly started attacking with a lot of pressure on NorthPointe’s defense. Midway through the first half, Emma VanGoor beat her defender up the left sideline and placed a shot on goal. The NorthPointe goalie made a save, and the ball ended up bouncing inside the six where Julia Timmer quickly found the back of the net for the first goal of the season putting the Eagles up 1-0 which is how the half ended.   The second half continued much like the first with the Eagles putting a lot of pressure on the NorthPointe defense and the NorthPointe goalie making several saves. Emma VanGoor continued to find success up the left side and found her first goal of the season after a scramble at the goal line. NorthPointe finished the game attacking with a few opportunities leading to a big breakaway save in the last ten minutes from the Eagles Phoebe Cracker.  In the end, the Eagles secured their first win of the season with the game ending as the rain started to fall with a final score of 2-0.
