Rascally Rams Run Rampant in Regional Say that as fast as you can 3 times! The Boy's Varsity Lacrosse team ended their post-season hopes last night as they faced their 2nd team of Rams in the Regional Tournament. The perennial state powerhouse Rockford Rams downed the Eagles 14 to 10 in the Regional Semi-Final game at Rockford's Carson-Munger Stadium. The Boys joined the legion of State Lax powerhouses such as Detroit Country Day, GR Catholic Central, Cranbrook, and Orchard Lake St. Marys who have fallen victim to the Rams this season. The Eagles have lost 2 goaltenders this season and JV goalie Isaac Zull stepped into the cage these last couple of weeks and did Yeoman's work protecting the House, making several great saves last night. The Eagle's defense was the star of the evening as the athletic crew of Long Poles limited the shifty Rams to mostly shots from well outside the cage. Of specific note was Burt VanderKodde locking down the Ram's leading scorer, and limiting his ability to get his hands free, along with Logan Eaton sucking up ground balls and leading the way on the Eagle's clears down to offensive territory. The Eagles struggled at the faceoff X without starting FOGO Ben Toly, but the double D pole combo on the wings of Caleb Morrison and Logan helped the Eagles start winning the draws late in the game. The Eagles went down early finishing, the 1st quarter down 3 to 0 before they adapted to the Ram's lightning-fast style of play. The fellas settled down in the 2nd keeping pace with Rockford scoring 4 to their 6. After the 3rd quarter, the lead looked insurmountable with Rockford burying 4 more goals to take a commanding 13 to 5 lead. But, as has been true of this group of young men all season, this group of guys from 4 different high schools who only met each other this past March, they came together and lit it up in the 4th quarter, not quitting, but burying 5 goals to the Ram's 1. Points on the night went to Logan Eaton, and Collin Wildman each with an assist for 1, Brock Grieve and Brady Nitz each with a goal for 1, Blake Grieve Grieve with 2 assists, and Henry Mast with a goal and an assist for 2 points each. Luke Afman had a Hat Trick with 3 goals for 3 points, and Senior All-Conference Middie Jake Eaton had a big end to his high school lacrosse career with 7 points coming from 3 assists and 4 goals!

Boys Lax Grabs Rams by the Horns in 1st Round Regional Win The Varsity Boys Lacrosse made the trip to Holt High School last night to face the Holt Rams in the 1st Round Regional playoff game for Division 1, Region 2. The Rams butted in the first goal on the Eagles as the South Christian Seniors on the team were still shaking the cobwebs off from their graduation all-nighter the night before. The fellas responded and traded the lead back and forth throughout the 1st quarter with it ending tied at 2 Ginos each. The Eagles finally woke up and got to work in the 2nd banging home 4 goals to take a 6 to 3 lead at the half. The 3rd quarter stayed tight with the buzzer sounding and the scoreboard showing Eagles 8, Rams 4. Then the penalty bug reared its ugly head and bit the Eagles in the 4th quarter as the Boys in Blue and Black played a good chunk of the final stanza man down. Holt managed to put away 3 goals in the 4th to get within 1 but the Eagles held them off netting another score to watch time expire with a 2 goal lead. JV Goalie, West Catholic Junior Issac Zull stepped into the net for the Eagles helping to overcome the injuries to the 2 varsity starters. He played magnificently, stoning several Holt point-blank shots in the 4th. The defense was again the shining star of this squad as the combined efforts of Kyle Struck, Logan Eaton, Caleb Morrison, Luke Selfe, Burt Vander Kodde, and Henry Jackson kept the Rams in the pen offensively. Logan Eaton "Hoovered" up 5 Ground Balls to get the fast break moving. Points on the night went to Colin Wildman with an underhand ripper from 12 yds out for 1, Blake Grieve had a goal and an assist for 2, Spencer Slagboom had 2 assists for 2 points, Jake Eaton had 3 points from 2 assists and a goal, as did Luke Afman with an assist and 2 goals, Also with 3 points on the night and a Hat Trick was Brock Grieve scoring 3 Ginos right in front of the cage with all 130 pounds of him getting knocked sailing each time by a Ram defender as the ball ripped twine in the back of the cage.

Eagles Win: 6 - 5
Varsity Boys Lax Hold On for the "W" in Rematch with the Wildcats The Eagles made the trek to western Kent County on Thursday for a Tier 3 rematch against Jenison. In the earlier season game, the Eagles snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in a heartbreaking 6 to 5 loss. This time around the Eagles came to play, even without several of the South Christian Seniors who were attending their Honors Convocation that evening. The boys in blue and black jumped out to a 6-goal lead by the end of the 1st half that the Cats were unable to answer. The 2nd half was not so friendly to the Laxers as the wheels started to come off of their wagon. Injuries to 2 key players combined with the missing SC Scholars left the Eagles calling on JV players to step into the breach. The boys managed to hold on with the final buzzer showing the Eagles clinging to a 6 to 5 "W". Irony you say, or just Deja Vu all over again? Points on the night went to Spencer Slagboom with an assist for 1 point, 2 points for Jake Eaton with 2 assists, and Colin Wildman with 2 goals, 3 points went to Luke Afman with 2 assists and a goal, and the big swinger for the night was Brock Grieve with an assist and a Hat Trick for 4 points.

Eagles Lose: 7 - 8
Boys Varsity Lax goes down Swinging 7 - 8 In their 2nd meet-up of the season Tier 3 conference leader Holland Christian visited Eagles Stadium last night and handed the Eagles a tough loss. The Eagles played a great game that was tight all the way through. The Eagles led at the end of the 1st 2 - 1, The Maroons led 3-2 at the half and then jumped out to a 7 to 3 lead at the end of the 3rd. Unfortunately, the Eagles tender went out with an injury on a Maroon goal in the 3rd and some of the wind left the Eagle's sails. Junior BJ Apol stepped into the cage once again for the remainder of the game performing well and giving the confidence the fellas needed to keep pumping. A lesser group of young men would have packed it in, down 4 ginos going into the final 12 minutes, but this co-op of players from 4 different high schools has bonded as a unit, and they proved it by going on a scoring rampage in the opening minutes of the 4th stanza. The fellas banged home 3 goals in less 2.5 minutes leaving the Holland Christian coach's heads spinning. The boys kept grinding trading a goal each in the final minutes, but found themselves 1 short when the final horn sounded. Ben Toly beat the Maroons like a drum at the face-off X, winning 90% of his draws, and the defense's cacophony of communication kept the unit cohesive and really limited HC's opportunities in the waning minutes. Points on the night went to attackman Luke Afman with 1 from an assist, 2 for Jake Eaton and Brady Nitz with a goal and assist each, 2 points for Attackman Brock Grieve with 2 goals, including a diving affair with Maroon D poles riding him like a rented mule. 3 Points each went to Middies Colin Wildman and Blake Grieve, Colin with an assist and 2 goals, including an underhanded rocket ripping top corner twine, and Blake having 2 assists and a goal.

Eagles Win: 14 - 0
Boys Varsity Lax Takes the Reins in 14-0 Win Over Broncos On a very windy, cold, and drizzly evening, the fellas saddled up and rode out to Coopersville for another Tier 3 matchup. The game was in the Eagle's talons from early on as they were up 4 zip at the end of the 1st, and 10 to Nil at the Half. The game presented a great opportunity for some younger Eagle players to see the field as a varsity player, with several JV players suited up for the game. John VanAntwerp in the net and Ben Toly at the Face-Off X were perfect on the night, with John handing the Broncs a shut out, and Ben winning all his draws before taking a seat and giving the face-off duties to freshman Evan Bolt who performed well. The defense created havoc for the Steeds and never let them get a settled possession, creating countless turnovers and forcing them to hail Mary outlet passes for their clears. There was only 1 penalty on the evening for the Birds which makes for much faster and more competitive play. Obviously a big night for the points tallies, with Logan Eaton, Henry Mast, Blake Grieve and Elijah VanderKodde each with a goal, Freshman Adrian Selfe and Adam VanderHart each with a goal and an assist for 2 points. Brock Grieve netted 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points, and his fellow Attackman Luke Afman rang up 2 goals and 4 assists. Once again the top point-getter on the night was Senior Jake Eaton who banged home 4 goals while taking on the role of Feeder-in-Chief as he racked up 6 assists for 10 points total.

The Eagles Varsity Boys Lax flew into the Cherry capital on Saturday for a pair of matches in the TC United Tourney. It was an early morning departure on that Holiday Coach with the 1st game a rematch against Traverse City United. The Eagles let in a last-second goal in a 14 to 13 loss to TC back earlier in April, and the rematch was much anticipated.  The game did not disappoint with a very physical game that only had the Eagles down by 1 at the half. By early in the 3rd quarter it was all tied up when an attack of the penalty bug swarmed the Eagles and they spent the remainder of the 3rd and part of the 4th in the sin bin. TC managed to pump in 4 goals before the Eagles answered and it was too little, too late as the final horn sounded with Eagles losing 10 to 7. John Antwerp was excellent in net for the Eagles, and with several of the regular defenders missing on the day, the stripped-down long pole cadre stepped up and kept the Birds in the fight. Senior Defender Bradley "Burt" Vander Kodde led the squad with (4) forced turnovers. Points on the day went to Colin Wildman and Luke Afman each with an assist, Brady Nitz with 2 Ginos on rippers from up top, and Blake Grieve with 3 points from and 2 goals. The point leader for the game was Jake Eaton with 5 points from 2 Apples and 3 Goals.

Eagles Laxers Have the Right Formula to Down the Chemics of Midland 11 to 4 In the 2nd match of the Saturday foray into the land of Cherries the Varsity Boys came out of the nest hot with only a short break between games and jumped on the Chemics of Midland with a 7 to 2 lead going into the half. They never let off the gas, finishing with 3 unanswered goals in the 4th and a dominating style of play shutting down the Midland shooters with aggressive on-hands defense and active feet. Ben Toly was solid at the Face-Off X getting the Eagles the ball more than half of his draws, and Caleb Morrison and Logan Eaton led the way in clearing the ball out of the Eagle zone when Midland committed a turnover down low. Jake Eaton was in Fuego on Saturday adding to his earlier 5-point game vs. TC with another 7 points from 3 assists and 4 goals for a 12-point day. Luke Afman had 2 assists, Brock Grieve returned to the field after recovering from a bad wheel and picked up 2 points with a goal and an assist, Womb mate Blake Grieve picked up 3 points with an assist and 2 goals, as did Hank Mast.

Eagles Win: 8 - 7
Varsity Boys Lacrosse Wins a Squeaker vs. East Kentwood 8 to 7 The Varsity Boys Lacrosse Team hosted the Falcons of EK last night at Eagle Stadium and managed to notch a win by a tailfeather. The Falcons were a hard-nosed team that was strong on the draw and played physically throughout the game. It was not the Eagle's day to buy a lottery ticket as they hit posts, the goaltender, defensive players, and everything but the back of the net on numerous shot opportunities. The Eagle's pace of play was very sporadic as the game was riddled with penalties, and they spent way too much time in the box. When not playing man down they were trying to avoid the turnover bug. Scoring on the night saw Logan Eaton, Henry Mast, Blake Grieve, and Erik Mileski each with an assist, Luke Afman with a goal, Spencer Slagboom with a goal and an assist, Brady Nitz with 2 goals, and BJ Apol with 2 Assists and a Goal. The points Leader for the night was Jake Eaton with an Assist and a Hat Trick for 4 Points.

Eagles Lose: 8 - 9
Boys Varsity Lacrosse Loses a Heartbreaker to Jenison 9 to 8 The Laxers were at Eagle Stadium last night for another Tier 3 Conference battle against the Jension Wildcats. The two squads traded goals throughout the 1st half with the game always within 1. The penalty bug bit the Eagles in their backside as they struggled to gain momentum, if it was not a penalty it was a turnover as they found themselves down 9 to 5 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The defense once again was stalwart with not one but three penalty situations where they had to play 2 men down. The Eagles did not quit, and mounted a 4th quarter charge, banging home 3 goals in the 4th quarter to close the gap to within 1 goal with under a minute to play. Possession was gained off of a Wildcat turnover by Caleb Morrison, and the Eagles called a quick timeout to set up what they hoped would be a game-tying Biscuit, but alas it was not to be. Points on the night went to BJ Apol with an assist, Luke Afman and Blake Grieve each with a goal, Colin Wildman with 2 points from ab assist and a goal, Jake Eaton and Spencer Slagboom each with 2 goals, and finally the leading point getter for the evening was Logan Eaton with 4 from his team-high 3 assists and 1 goal.

Boys Varsity Lacrosse Splits in Bulldog Tourney The Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team headed down to southern Kent County as the guest of the Byron Center Bulldogs to play two games on Saturday, April 22. They split on the day beating Mattawan 8 to 4 and losing to the Host Bulldogs 10 to 5. In the 1st contest vs. Mattawan, the fellas went down by 2 goals early but settled down and began playing some solid offense. With all the defense on hand, and Goalie John Van Antwerp as its quarterback their play was rock solid and they did a great job creating turnovers and forcing shots from outside. Points for the contest went to Luke Afman, and Spencer Slagboom each with a goal, Colin Wildman and BJ Apol with a goal and an assist for 2 points, and Blake Grieve with a Hat Trick from his 3 goals, and the feeder of the day went to Jake Eaton with 1 goal and 4 Assists for 5 points. In the 2nd tilt of the day, the Eagles had to take the field immediately after their first game against a rested Byron Center team. Momentum from the earlier win carried them into the end of the 1st quarter with a 2 to 1 lead. However, the 2nd and 3rd quarters saw the Eagles let off the gas, and BC pumped in 6 unanswered goals leaving the Eagles staring at a big deficit in the 4th. They responded well putting the next 3 Biscuits in the Basket to get the game within 2, but the Bulldogs buried 3 Bones of their own in the last 4 minutes of play to clip the Eagle's wings. The defense was again stalwart and several of the younger players got playing time in this non-league fiesta to evaluate the contribution they could make, with good results.  Points went to Colin Wildman and Blake Grieve each with 1 assist, Jake Eaton and Spencer Slagboom with 2 points each coming off of 1 assist and 1 goal each, and the leading point-getter on the day was D Pole Logan Eaton stepping into the Crease Bruiser on the Manup Offense to help finish inside, and that he did with 3 points from and assist and 2 goals in close.

Eagles Lose: 3 - 5
Tough loss last night for the Varsity Boys Laxers against Tier 3 opponent Holland Christian 5 to 3. The fellas played incredibly tough defense which saw the game scoreless after the first quarter of play. The Maroon's home-field advantage saw them chipping in a couple of goals in the 2nd, and 3rd and one more in the 4th quarter. The Eagles finally got their feet under them in the 4th banging home 3 goals, but it was too little too late. The near misses and direct shots to the Maroon tender's chest were the story as the Eagle offensive engine sputtered, and never caught. On the bright side, the return of goalie John VanAntwerp was a ray of sunshine on a cool evening as he made numerous saves, key ground ball pickups, and excellent passes out of the zone. FOGO Ben Toly continued his winning ways by winning 75% of his draws, and again the defensive crew was all over the zone making the Hollanders work for every shot on net. Goals on the night were 1 each for Luke Afman, Spencer Slagboom, and Brady Nitz, with assists going to Henry Mast and Long Stick Middie, Caleb Morrison.

Eagles Win: 24 - 0
The Boy's Varsity Lacrosse Team flew into Eagle Stadium on a beautiful Friday evening for their 2nd Tier 3 conference tilt of this year's young campaign. The Boys in Pantone 292 & Black were looking to break the Broncos of Coopersville. By the end of the 1st Quarter it was evident there would be no rodeo for the Broncs as the Eagles were flying high and were setting on a 9 to 0 lead. The second quarter was more of the same as they racked up another 9 goals and kept the equine menace out of the defensive end of the filed almost the entire half only allowing 2 shots on fill-in Tender BJ Apol. The Eagles slowed the scoring down a bit in the 2nd half but kept up the defensive pressure not allowing a single shot on the net in the entire 2nd. 6 more goals were tallied bringing the final score to 24 to 0. Sophomore Face-Off Specialist posted a perfect faceoff win percentage giving the Eagles the ball on all of his draws. The points were many and spread all through the flock. From low to high, Jake Eaton, and Elijah VanderKodde each had assists, Brady Nitz had a goal. Caleb Morrison, Burt VanderKodde, and Ben Toly each with an Apple and a Gino, Ben's first Varsity Goal! Erik Mileski with 2 goals. Logan Eaton with 2 Goals and 2 Assists, and Colin Wildman with an Assist and a Hat Trick for 4 points also. Spencer Slagboom, Blake Grieve, and Henry Mast each had a double Hatty with 3 Assists and 3 Goals for 6 points and the big shooter for the evening was Luke Afman with 3 Assists and 4 Goals for a total of 7 points.

Eagles Win: 6 - 5
In the first Tier 3 tilt of the 2023 campaign, the Boy's Varsity Lacrosse team flew into Falcon stadium for a bird of prey match-up. Unfortunately for our Eagles, they entered the game flat, maybe a bit overconfident, a bit worn from the tough battle with the excellent play on Monday night vs. Traverse City. Either way, the boys in black went down 3 goals quickly to a very scrappy and determined East Kentwood team. The Eagles struggled to penetrate the middle of the Kentwood defense and between the EK Goalie standing on his head to block shots and the turnover bug chomping at the Eagle talons, it was not looking pretty. Slowly the boys started to close the gap with a 5 to 3 deficit showing at the end of the 3rd quarter. The offense finally started to get some traction, possess the ball, and scored 3 unanswered goals in the fourth with the final game-winning goal coming off a great low-to-high ripper from Jake Eaton off of an assist from Luke Afman with only 6 seconds showing on the game clock. Major kudos to BJ Apol for again standing in at tender and having an incredible game, blocking numerous shots to keep the Eagles in it when the defensive wheels were coming off the wagon. Scoring on the night went to Colin Wildman with an assist, Blake Grieve and Elijah Pleune with a goal, Jake Eaton with the aforementioned game winner and an assist, Luke Afman with 2 assists and a goal for 3 points, and finally Spencer Slagboom with 2 Ginos and an Apple for 3 points. The Boys Laxers are back in action Friday night at Eagle Stadium in another Tier 3 tilt ready to ride the Broncos of Coopersville.

Eagles Lose: 13 - 14
The Trojans of Traverse City United made the trek south last night to visit Eagle Stadium for the last of the pre-league games for the Boys Varsity Laxers. The Boys had been pretty banged up going into Spring break and with no practices before the Trojan Horse appeared outside our gates the coaches did not know what to expect. TC had played perennial Top Tier Boys Lacrosse Powerhouse Birmingham Brother Rice to a very close finish earlier this season, so there was trepidation in the Eagle Nest pre-game. Even though the final score of Eagles 13 Trojans 14 showed another loss for the boys in blue and black, as in any story it is what went down between the opening whistle and the final horn that told the real story. The boys played like a new team pulling out both offensive firepower and defensive toughness that the coaches have known they were capable of, but had not seen to date. Attackman turned Goalie BJ Apol turned in another stalwart perfomance standing in for the injured Eagle starter. FOGO Ben Toly took the measure of the muscled-up TC Face-Off specialist, and after the first few draws gave him a lesson in how bigger isn't always better, continuing his ability to get the Eagles the possession off the draw winning better than 50% of his draws. The Eagle Long poles were everywhere shutting down and a very active Trojan offense. Points on the night went to Henry Mas with an assist, a goal, and an assist for Blake Grieve for 2 points, 2 Ginos for Spencer Slagboom, 3 Assists to Colin Wildman, 2 goals, and 1 assist to Luke Afman for 3 points, a Hatty and 1 Apple to Jake Eaton for 4 points, and 4 goals for Elijah "Jah" Pleune.

Eagles Lose: 7 - 12
The 2023 Boys Varsity Lacrosse Campaign got underway Friday night as the newly formed Co-Op with West Catholic, South Christian, and Calvin Christian flew into Eagle Stadium only to be shot out of the sky by the Red Arrows of Lowell. The game started out as a defensive dogfight with the score knotted at 1 geno each at the end of the 1st quarter. Lowell went with the Flaming Tipped Arrows for the 2nd and fired 7 past the Eagle tender to go up 8-2 at the half. The boys knuckled down and started to play some good lacrosse in the 3rd with each team netting 1 goal apiece. The 4th saw the Eagle laxers win the quarter 2 goals to 1, but it wasn't enough to overcome the 2nd quarter deficit. Goal scoring was spread around with Junior Brock Grieve leading the way with 2 Biscuits in the Basket, his womb mate Blake Grieve netted 1, South Christian Seniors Brady Nitz and Elijah "Jah" Pleune netted 1 each, Sophomore Spencer Slagboom banged one home, and finally Senior Jake Eaton had 1 goal while leading the way with 3 assists. Brock Grieve and Jah each contributed an Apple. The defense played well throughout most of the game, but kudos go out to Junior BJ Apol who had the guts to put on the Goalie gear, as our regular Goalie was down with an injury. BJ made some awesome saves. Finals score GRC Co-Op 7, Lowell 12
