The Eagles battled against a strong EGR team at Gainey yesterday.  Some of the most entertaining and impressive points of the season were played in this match.  Our guys hustled.  Win or lose, we value leaving a earnest effort on the court, and we did that as a team yesterday against EGR. Some highlights from the match include: Joel VanHekken and Derrick Jacobsen crushing overheads at one doubles, Alex Amash and Eli Compagner tracking down ridiculous balls and refusing to leave points at 2 doubles, Caleb Westhouse and Nate Scheffler hitting short angle approach shots and then coming in to net to finish the point,  Bradley Buter and BJ Apol staying patient and consistent from the baseline to take EGR to a tiebreak at 4 doubles, Josh Vanschepen and Simon Speulstra hitting volleys away from and between EGR's players at net, Henry Snow and Jake Mersman measuring their returns on 2nd serves and going down to line for winners,  Jerry Zhang playing some of the longest points of the the whole match battling at the singles position going 5-8, 6-8.  The team will be practicing at Gainey today in preparation for their match against Hudsonville at home on Wednesday. Go Eagles!

The Eagles had a great showing at the Zeeland East Quad besting Catholic Central 5-1, Unity Christian 4-2 and Zeeland East 2-0 (ZE only had two complete doubles teams).  Our guys did a great job of weathering the moments when their opponents gained some momentum, and then competing to regain control. It was a beautiful day for tennis and highlight of the season for sure. We got Unity back at some of the flights that we. lost when we played them at the very start of the season.  This is an awesome result to see because it's clear evidence of growth for our players! Some highlights from the day include Joel VanHekken and Derrick Jacobsen coming back against CC to win at 1 doubles 5-7, 6-3, 10-8,  Eli Compagner and Alex Amash winning at 2 doubles against ZE 6-2, 6-1, Caleb Nykamp and Nate Scheffler beating UC at 3 doubles 6-6 (7-5), 6-2, Caleb Westhouse and Connor Ryan winning against CC at 4 doubles 6-4, 6-2, BJ Apol and Bradley Buter beating UC at 5 doubles 6-3, 6-3, Jerry Zhang and Jake Mersman beating UC at 6 doubles 6-4, 6-3, Henry Snow and Jake Mersman beating CC at 6 doubles 6-1, 6-0.  The team is looking forward to their away match at Thornapple-Kellogg this afternoon.  Go Eagles!

The Eagles had a great weekend of tennis at the Mona Shores Tri.  The team won against Mona Shores 4-2 and fell to a strong FHN team 0-6.  We played third set tiebreakers against FHN at four different flights and are looking forward to our rematch against them in two weeks!  The tournament director from Mona Shores wanted to play an abbreviated format - best two out of three sets, sets to 4 games.  We pushed for normal sets to 6 games because Whitehall had already dropped out of the tournament and we always want to maximize play time for our players, but to no avail.  Some highlights from the Tri are Joel VanHekken and Eli Compagner winning at 1 doubles against Mona Shores 4-4 (7-0), 3-5, (13-11), Alex Amash and Bradley Buter fighting to take FHN to a third set tiebreak at 2nd doubles 3-5, 4-1, (5-10) Caleb Nykamp and Nate Scheffler winning against Mona Shores at 3 doubles 4-1, 4-1, Connor Ryan, and Caleb Westhouse beating Mona Shores 4-0, 4-2 at 4 doubles, BJ Apol and Josh Vanshepen mounting an awesome comeback taking FHN to a third set tiebreak at 5 doubles 1-4, 5-3, (6-10), Henry Snow and Jake Mersman beating Mona Shores, 4-0, 4-2, at 6 doubles, Jerry Zhang and Simon Speulstra winning against Mona Shores 4-2, 4-3, at 7 doubles.   The team is looking forward to playing FHC away this afternoon, and Byron Center at home on Wednesday.  Go Eagles!

Eagles Win: 4 - 0
The Eagles played well yesterday against Lowell with a final a score of 7-0!  Lowell had four doubles teams total and cycled three of those teams through 2 rounds of pro sets so that all of our seven doubles team could get a match in.  The team played with consistency, didn't give Lowell many free points, and capitalized on the short balls we received by either putting the ball away or making their opponents move.  Joel VanHekken & Derrick Jacobsen won 6-1, 6-2, Eli Compagner and Alex Amash won 8-3, Caleb Nykamp and Nate Scheffler won 8-1, Connor Ryan and Caleb Westhouse won 8-0, BJ Apol and Josh Vanschepen won 8-2, Jake Mersman and Henry Snow won 8-5, Simon Speulstra and Jerry Zheng won 8-4. The team is looking forward to our away match against South Christian next Tuesday.  We wish everyone a happy Labor Day Weekend! Go Eagles!

I'd like to commend our players for their showing yesterday at the Hudsonville Invitational this past Saturday.  They chose to work hard with persistence against an extremely strong line up of teams in adverse heat conditions. Teams like Rockford, Hudsonville, West Ottawa, and EGR brought a level of competition we had not yet seen this season, and I am pleased with how we stacked up against them yesterday.  There are technical and strategic elements we can improve on and we'll address those in practice, but If we continue to work hard, I believe our team has the mental game and ability to surprise a team like Hudsonville when we see them at the end of this season.  A huge thank you to parents and the family's of our team who came out to support, and kept our guys fed and hydrated through out the day.  You are an integral part of our teams success! Highlights from the tournament include Caleb Nykamp and Connor Ryan besting West Ottowa in a third set tiebreaker at 3rd doubles 6-1, 4-6, 10-2.  Henry Snow and Jake Mersman beating EGR at 6 doubles 6-2, 6-1. Bradley Buter and BJ Apol absolutely battling West Ottowa at 5 doubles winning a 2nd set tie breaker and taking them to 8-10 in the 3rd set super breaker 3-6, 7-6, 8-10. The team will be working hard at practice this week in preparation for our away match against Lowell on Wednesday 9/1. Go Eagles!

Eagles Win: 8 - 0
Yesterday was a beautiful day for tennis at Gainey and the Eagles played hard for a 8-0 win against Forest Hills Eastern.  FHE brought 13 players, and had to default 7th and 8th doubles flights, but they recycled their players in pro sets at 5th through 8th doubles so that every Eagle could get a match in. Our players worked hard across at every flight.  I was especially pleased with our focus during game and deuce points.  Christian Vandenberg and Derrick Jacobsen won at 1st doubles 6-2, 6-2, Eli Compagner and Joel Vanhekken won at 2nd doubles 6-1, 6-3, Connor Ryan and Alex Amash won at 3rd doubles 6-3, 6-2, Nate Scheffler and Caleb Nykamp won at 4th doubles 6-3, 6-2, Bradley Buter and BJ Apol won at 5th doubles 8-0, Caleb Westhouse and Josh Vanschepen won 8-0, Simon Speulstra and Josh Vanschepen won 8-2, Henry Snow and Jake Mersman won 8-0.  The team is looking forward to their home match against Thornapple-Kellogg this Wednesday.   Go Eagles!

Eagles Lose: 4 - 4
The Eagles had a competitive start to their season yesterday with a 4-4 tie against Unity Christian.  Some incredibly close matches were played; tiebreakers decided two matches.  As a coach it was extremely rewarding to see the team take skills we rehearsed in practice anf put them into action in a match play scenario.  Our players left a strong effort on the court yesterday, and a great result followed.   Christian Vandenburg and Derrick Jacobsen played amazing tennis in a remarkably tight match at 1st doubles 4-6, 6-4, 6-10.  Joel Vanhekken and Eli Compagner won at 2nd doubles 7-5, 6-2.  Alex Amash and Connor Ryan played a competitive at 3rd doubles 3-6, 0-6.  Caleb Nykamp and Nate Scheffler won at 4th doubles 6-1, 6-1.  Bradley Buter and BJ Apol fought hard at 5th doubles 3-6, 5-7.  Caleb Westhouse and Josh Vanschepen won at 6th doubles 6-4, 7-5. Simon Spuelstra and Jake Mersman clutched a second set tiebreaker and won at 7th doubles 6-3, 6-6 (7-3).  At the 8th double position Henry Snow played round robin doubles with Unity Christian  players. The Eagles are looking forward to their home match against Forest Hills Eastern next Monday at Gainey!
