Conference play continued with the Eagles going up against known opponents, having played each team previously in conference and non-conference matches. All three matches went to a tie-breaker set and were decided by a mere 2-3 points each. In each match, the Eagles won the opening set but couldn’t close the door in second. The Eagles showed perseverance in the third sets with key runs, but finished short against the offensive pressure of South Christian and Lowell. The team looks forward to those re-matches in the coming week! The win over Covenant Christian was celebrated after a discouraging loss to them last week.  The Eagles were led in kills by senior outside hitter Irvin "Bear" Burt and in assists by senior setter Connor Geesin. Leading the defense in digs were senior defensive specialist Joe DeVries and senior right side hitter Zach Bierling and in blocks was freshman middle hitter Tommie Anderson. After three rounds of conference play, the Eagles are 3-5 (6-7 overall), tied for fourth place (out of seven teams) in the competitive Central Division. The Eagles hosted a quad for the Central Division opener with South Christian and conference newcomers Sparta and (fellow Eagles) Hudsonville.  In the first match, the Eagles faced Sparta. While a first-time team in the Michigan Boys Volleyball conference (MIBoysVB), Sparta showed surprising skill out of the gate. The Eagles played consistently against the new foe and fought off a few comebacks for the win (2-0) behind a string of blistering service aces from junior outside hitter Tanner Warners. In the second match, the Eagles (of GR Christian) faced the (other) Eagles of Hudsonville. Hudsonville looked like a veteran team, controlling the ball and the offense. The Eagles got behind in both sets following several mental errors and couldn’t quite get their footing back, giving Hudsvonville a 2-0 win and GR Christian’s first loss of the season. In their final match, the Eagles faced division rival South Christian. South’s offense proved to be more than the Eagles could handle, led by a formidable AAU basketball player disguised as a volleyball outside hitter. After losing the first set, the Eagles regained their composure to secure the second set behind steller setting from a two-setter offense featuring Junior Sam Seven and Senior Connor Geesin. However, an early deficit in the tiebreaker was more than the Eagles could overcome, leading to a 2-1 loss. SCOREBOARD GR Christian over Sparta                25-20    25-23     Hudsonville over GR Christian        25-23    25-14     South Christian over GR Christian  25-16    20-25    15-7

Eagles Lose: -
The Eagles opened their season against the Red Arrows of Lowell in a non-conference dual match at home. The Eagles were eager to play, especially after the unexpected non-season of 2020. This year’s seniors were sophomores the last time they stepped on the court.  The Eagles played a bit timid and unsure to kick off the first set but were able to claw their way back in behind a stretch of aggressive serves from junior outside hitter Tanner Warners. Lowell’s outside hitter racked up a number of points of his own with uncontested kills from the outside and back row. The teams traded leads repeatedly, each fighting off multiple set point opportunities from the opposition. The Eagles showed resilience and determination, emerging on top 28-26. In set 2, the Eagles built a comfortable margin early on behind offensive bursts from senior outside hitter Irvin "Bear" Burt. They held the lead for a 25-19 win concluding with clutch serves from junior Xavier Wright. Set 3 proved to be another nail-biter with multiple runs on both sides of the net. At this point, the Eagles were building confidence, executing their offense more consistently behind the setting of junior Sam Seven. Furthermore, their defense energized their offense with highlight-reel blocks from Senior right side hitter Zach Bierling and junior middle hitter Charlie Walters along with eye-popping diggs from Warners, Bierling and senior Connor Geesin. That confidence carried the Eagles to a 25-22 win, concluding the straight-set victory (28-26, 25-19, 25-22). Next up… the Eagles host their conference opener Monday, April 19 with a Central Division quad match vs Sparta, Hudsonville and South Christian.
