Grand Rapids Christian took the hill at Boyne Mountain Ski resort for the MHSAA Division II Downhill Skiing State Championship.  It was a great weekend, with an awesome training session on Saturday and an awesome race on Monday!  Although the courses were challenging, conditions were prime for ski racing!  This marks the 3rd consecutive year that Grand Rapids Christian has been represented at the State Championship with both the boys and girls teams!  The Eagles competed against 8 other schools and a variety of individuals from as far North at Houghton (U.P.) and as far South as Detroit (Bloomfield Hills). The Eagle boys finishing 7th in Giant Slalom and 5th in Slalom, for an overall finish of 7th.  The Eagle girls finished 6th in Giant Slalom and 6th in Slalom, for an overall finish of 7th.   Highlights from yesterday’s State Finals are listed below: (Please note: In the state finals, individual qualifiers get pulled out when it comes to team scoring.  Both scores for individuals are listed below with their team score in parenthesis).  Anna Angell finished 26th (22nd) in Giant Slalom and 18th (13th) in Slalom Kiera Bishop finished 28th (23rd) in Giant Slalom and 28th (22nd) in Slalom Dylan Kuiken finished 30th (23rd) in Giant Slalom and 26th (19th) in Slalom Mark VanHekken finished 35th (28th) in Giant Slalom Willem Gronsman finished 16th (11th) in Slalom A couple of things / highlights to note for the girls team: Team completed their best team performance in a State Final in history! Team beat Harbor Springs in Giant Slalom and East Grand Rapids in Slalom!  Both those teams were expected to win or compete for a state title (Harbor Springs won their respective Regional and EGR was the State final runner up last year)! Team had three girls score in the top 25 (as it relates to team scoring) for each event – another first / best! A couple of things / highlights to note for the boys team: Team also completed their best team performance in a State Final in history! Team provided the first ever top 5 finish in a State Championship for our program by finishing 5th as a team in Slalom! Team also took down a regional champion (East Grand Rapids) in Slalom! Additionally, congratulations to Anna Angell and Willem Gronsman for being selected MHSAA Division II Second Team All-State!  This was another first for our Program! From Coach Mencarelli to the ski team: It’s very exciting for us to see results like this!  Although there were some challenges yesterday for some, never forget that it took all of you as members of this team to get us to another state finals!  The achievements of the team yesterday belong to all of you, and you should be very proud of yourselves and your teammates!  Know that your coaches are extremely proud of all of you and its clear our program is heading in a great direction!

Grand Rapids Christian took the hill at Cannonsburg yesterday for MHSAA Region 5 State Qualifier Race where the top three teams in the region advance to the MHSAA Division II State Final at Boyne Mountain.  Region 5 consists of 13 other high schools from locations as far south as South Haven and as far north as Cadillac and has become one of the largest regionals in the state (in terms of participating teams).  While morning conditions were more seasonal, the afternoon produced temperatures near 50 degrees!  As the temperature heated up, so did the Eagles!  The Eagles skied their best race of the year and qualified both the boys and girls teams to the State Final! The Eagle boys finished 2nd in Giant Slalom and 1st in Slalom, for an overall finish of 2nd; the Eagle girls finished 3rd in Slalom and 3rd in Giant Slalom, for an overall finish of 3rd.  Highlights of yesterday’s Regional Race include: Willem Gronsman finished 6th in Slalom Ethan Lenters finished 9th in Slalom and 15th in Giant Slalom Brock Barron finished 9th in Giant Slalom and 8th in Slalom Dylan Kuiken finished 10th in Giant Slalom and 10th in Slalom Mitchell Winks finished 12th in Giant Slalom and 12th in Slalom Mark VanHekken finished 14th in Slalom Anna Angell finished 9th in Giant Slalom and 9th in Slalom Annelise Kuiper finished 12th in Giant Slalom and 11th in Slalom Kiera Bishop finished 7th in Giant Slalom and 4th in Slalom Abigail Hoekzema finished 14th in Giant Slalom Congratulations to Willem Gronsman, Ethan Lenters, Brock Barron, Mitchell Winks, Mark VanHekken, Dylan Kuiken, Anna Angell, Kiera Bishop, Annelise Kuiper, and Abigail Hoekzema for being selected to the Region 5 all Region Ski Team! This was team skiing at its finest, the Eagle boys placed all 6 athletes in the top 15 for Slalom and in the top 25 for Giant Slalom while the Eagle girls placed all 6 athletes in the top 25 for Giant Slalom and 5 athletes in the top 25 for Slalom!  This was by far our best regional performance ever! Thank you to our parents who made their presence known – we could hear your cow bells everywhere!  Thank you for all the support, including emotional and logistical, that you have provided to the athletes and coaches this year, you guys have always been the backbone of the program and we couldn’t do it without you!

After Friday’s frigid temperatures, yesterday’s sunshine just felt great!  We had a lot of going on in the last couple of days, including a dual meet with Cadillac on Friday and the Norms GS Cup Invitational Race yesterday.  The Eagles faced off against Forrest Hills Northern/Eastern, Spring Lake, West Catholic/Catholic Central, Rockford, Forrest Hills Central, Northview, Grand Haven, and Caledonia.  The boys and girls Varsity skied a solid race with both finishing first overall!  Great Team Skiing everyone, our boys scorers all finished in the top 15 (5 in the top 20) and our girls scorers all finished in the top 20 (also took 5 of the top 20 spots), awesome job everyone! Below are the Athletes who represented us on the Varsity Podium:  Dylan Kuiken medaled for 5th place This race also provided an opportunity for our JV team to race amongst other area JV teams and be scored.  Again, another solid performance with the JV girls finishing first overall and the JV boys finishing second overall. Below are the Athletes who represented us on the Varsity Podium: Emme Corl medaled for 1st place Lily Tatko medaled for 2nd place Sophia Leonard medaled for 3rd place Katherine Brandt medaled for 5th place  I will also add that our Middle School Girls continue our tradition of podium sweep in the middle school portion of the race, while we also had some representation on the Boys podium as well.  The future is bright! Great day all around yesterday!  Good Job Everyone!
