The GRC Varsity girls tennis team played in their last tournament of the season this past weekend which was the 2024 Division 3 State finals in Kalamazoo. There were about 25 schools that qualified for the state finals and they were all teams that finished top 2 or 3 in their regions across the state. This meant every match would be a competitive one whether it was a seeded or unseeded team. After two days of play, the GRC varsity girls tennis team finished in 6th place! The team needed every point gained to earn this finals finish. The team finished with 11 points. Close behind them was Holland Christian at 10 points and then Parma Western with 9 points. In the end, with FHE coming in 5th place, GRC proved to be the 2nd best team from the west side of the state and we are very proud of the girls performance this weekend and for the season. A lot of growth happened throughout the year and to finish top 10 after only returning 6 players from last year is very remarkable. I know the team is going to work hard this offseason and come back better and stronger than ever. DCD and Cranbrooks run at the top will be coming to an end soon. Here are the flight by flight results one last time:
1S Natalie Poortenga: Lost in the 2nd round to a player from Battle Creek Harper Creek. This girl ended up making it to the semifinals and was a very strong player.
2S Alex Vermeulen: Lost in the 2nd round to the #1 seed DCD. She lost 2-6, 5-7 and player her very competitively especially in the 2nd set and was this close to upsetting her. This girl went on to win the finals too and shows how great of a player Alex is to almost get a set off of her and make a comeback.
3S Kaitlyn Schmitt: Lost in the semifinals. Kaitlyn has now made three straight semifinals in her career. To get there she dominated a Chelsea player 6-1, 6-2 and this was a player she lost to last year. This shows how much she has grown in a year. She lost to DCD in the semifinals but gave her a fight until the end and it was a very close match. Kaitlyn also saved the team by making it to day 2 and extending the GRC “making it to day 2” streak to 4 straight years.
4s Avah Jerke: Lost in the quarterfinals to FHE. Avah played super well and it was a long and close match the whole time. The other girl was a determined senior who would not miss a shot and Avah gave it her all until the very end.
1D Frankie Volkema/Anna Jacobsen: Lost in the 2nd round. They played a strong unseeded Gross Ille team and played some of their best tennis of the year in their last match. I am proud of both of these girls unwaivering fight and heart they showed all season.
2D Betta Klein/Gwyn Artz: Lost in the 2nd round. They played the #4 seed Cranbrook in the 2nd round who was a very strong team that ended up winning the whole flight. These girls played this team very strong and was proud of their fight until the very end.
3D Rachel Larsen/Lucy VanDrunen: Lost in the quarterfinals. They dominated a Mason team to get to the quarters and then faced the #2 seed Marion who was a very strong team that ending up making it to the finals.
4D Charline Dahu/Anneka Vermeulen: Lost in the quarterfinals. They played the #4 ranked Chelsea team and was very close to upsetting them. After losing a 1st set they bounced back to win the 2nd set and came up just a little short in the 3rd set. We were proud of this young pairing of how they kept fighting, adjusting, and gave it their all until the end.
Lastly, I would like to thank one last time to our graduating seniors: Natalie Poortenga, Alex Vermeulen, Frankie Volkema, Betta Klein, and Rachel Larsen. Your leadership, kindness, work ethic, character, and heart has left a lasting impact on myself and the whole program. Thank you for everything.

The GRC Varsity girls tennis team took on regionals at Portland High school last Thursday and the team finished in 2nd place and qualified for states! The team came up just short to FHE by 1 point for first place, but it is still a finish we are very proud of our team for since we had 10 brand new players to the team this year and it was evident that GRC and FHE were definitely the two best teams at regionals. The team had 4 regional flight champions and 2 runner ups. Very proud of the growth and heart this team has shown all season and on Thursday. I am also proud of the way they stood up to adversity, as after an already long day outdoors, the team had to go indoors after a rain delay to finish 4 matches and it ended up being a 12 hour day. Here are the flight results:
1s Natalie Poortenga loses in the semifinals. This was arguably the match of the day. She played an out of nowhere unseeded Petoskey player who was really good and their match was a 3 setter that exceeded 3 hours. They even had to pause and finish it inside. Natalie played her heart out and lost a close 5-7 last set.
2s Alex Vermeulen finishes in 2nd place. Alex dominated her first two matches against Ionia and EGR and played well against an FHE player in the finals who is undefeated on the year. Alex played some really good matches and got revenge against EGR from a previous last match loss.
3s Kaitlyn Schmitt finishes as a regional champ! Kaitlyn took care of business in her first two matches and proceeded to play a long 3 set match against FHE. Their match had to be moved indoors when it was 5-5 in the 3rd set. Kaitlyn faced this adversity head on and came away with a 7-6 last set victory in epic fashion!
4s Avah Jerke finishes as regional champ! Avah also cruised through her first two matches winning in record times. Her finals match against FHE was a little tougher as she dropped the first set but that didn't phase Avah as she proceeded to make the adjustments needed and make the comeback victory to win in 3 sets. Avah is the only player on the team to be a conference and regional champion on the year!
1D Frankie Volkema/Anna Jacobsen loses in the 2nd round to CC. CC was a seeded and good team and they battled the whole time and lost in a close one. Proud of these girls for how hard they have fought against some really good teams this year. They have grown in every match.
2D Betta Klein/Gwyn Artz finishes in 2nd place. These girls had an epic come behind victory against EGR in the semifinals. They lost the 1st set and proceeded to switch gears and dominate after that. They won the 2nd set and then won the third set 6-0. They lost to FHE in the finals in a match where it was 2-2 in the set and they also had to go indoors to play and they came up just short after that.
3d Rachel Larsen/Lucy VanDrunen are regional champions. These girls may have had the most convincing performance on the day. They won every match in straight sets and proceeded to dominate in the championship against EGR only dropping 3 games in total the whole match.
4d Charline Dahu/Anneka Vermeulen are regional champions. These girls also had a pretty dominating performance. After questionably getting the 2 seed when in my opinion were deserving of the 1 seed. These girls proceeded to prove the haters wrong and beat FHE in straight sets (went to 3 sets in previous match) and then beat EGR in straight sets (lost to them previously in 3 sets) to set the tone that they were clear #1 seed and best 4 dubs team there.
I also want to give a shoutout to Adelyn/Johanna/Anwen/Emily. These 4 girls were everyone's biggest supporters on the day and without these girls pushing our team to be better at every practice, our team would not be as good as they are now. They are true team players and we don't do as well as we did on the day without them. We have the best 5th and 6th doubles teams in the state!
The Eagles will face their last competition of the season at the Division 3 State Finals tournament that will be held 5/31 and 6/1 at Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan. Play will start at 8am Friday and last all day and semifinals and finals will be held on Saturday. Only a short hour drive away. Come out and support the varsity tennis squad in the state championships if you can. Go Eagles!!
The GRC Varsity girls tennis team had a busy weekend. On Friday they competed in their conference tournament and on Saturday they faced Division 3 regional opponent ranked #7 in the state, FHE. At the conference tournament, the Eagles finished in 3rd place! Here are the team point results:
1S Anwen Amash finishes in 5th place and wins consolation bracket. Anwen subbed in for Natalie and saying she exceeded expectations is an understatement. Anwen played a seeded BC player very well taking 4 games off of her in the 2nd set and followed that up with two victories and going 2-1 on the day. We are very proud of Anwen.
2S Alex Vermeulen finishes in 4th place. Alex came off a long testing day at school and still played some amazing tennis and competing really well against FHC and EGR in losses.
3s Kaitlyn Schmitt finishes in 3rd place. Kaitlyn played some really good tennis, getting a better score against FHC her second time around and getting revenge on a BC player that she previously lost to, to get 3rd place.
4s Avah Jerke finishes in 1st place. Avah dominated this tournament. She never lost a set, beat an FHC opponent she hadn't played yet, and got revenge against BC. Congratulations Avah!
1d Frankie Volkema/Anna Jacobsen finishes 6th place. These girls played well and got revenge from an earlier loss in the season as well and went 1-2 on the day.
2d Betta Klein/Gwyn Artz finishes in 4th place. They both played FHC very well the 2nd time around and had a good tournament.
3d Rachel Larsen/Lucy VanDrunen finishes in 3rd place. These girls played in arguably the match of the day against FHC to where they lost a close heart breaker in 10 point tie break in the 3rd set. They improved so much against this team the 2nd time around and they made sure to go take care of business against BC to finish in 3rd.
4d Charline Dahu/Anneka Vermeulen finishes in 5th place and wins consolation bracket. They drew a tough FHN team 1st round but proceeded to take care of business against their next two opponents.
5d Adelyn Breuninger/Johanna Bos finishes 2nd place. They played really good tennis and beat a good FHN team to make it to the championship and played a very strong BC team in the championship and played them well.
6d Jori Koons/Emily Vandenberge finishes 5th place and wins the consolation bracket. After played a good first match and coming away with a close loss, these girls proceeded to take care of business and win the next two matches.
Now to our dual match against FHE. The Eagles ended up taking away the 4-3 team victory and secure their spot as ranked #5 in the state. This was a big win for GRC since FHE is in their regional Thursday. Especially coming off a long day Friday, the team found the grit and energy to still show up and play their hearts out. We are very proud of the team. Here are the results:
1s Johanna Bos loses 8-7. Johanna played very good singles tennis and this match had a lot of good points and were very back and forth. She lost in a close tie break but we are proud of her performance, especially with everyone watching at the end.
2s Alex Vermeulen loses 1-6, 3-6
3s Kaitlyn Schmitt wins 7-5, 6-4
4s Avah Jerke wins 6-4, 6-4
1D Frankie Volkema/Anna Jacobsen loses 2-6, 0-6.
2D Betta Klein/Gwyn Artz loses 4-6, 5-7. These two girls played their hearts out and were battling the whole match. Down 2-5 in the 2nd set they battled back to make it 5-5 and then lost the next game in a back and forth deuce battle. I was proud of these girls grit.
3d Rachel Larsen/Lucy VanDrunen wins 6-2, 6-0. These girls won in dominated fashioning and were first off the court.
4d Charline Dahu/Anneka Vermeulen wins 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Once these girls found a good strategy and turned it in on in the 2nd set, there was no looking back as they made a great comeback to win this match.
5s Emily Vandenberge wins 8-5. Emily started off down 2-3 in the set and proceeded to make really good adjustments and have a very strong mental game to come back and win almost every game there on out and played some really good singles tennis.

On Saturday the Girls Varsity tennis team took on their first match day of the year playing in the Allegan Invitational. There were 8 teams at this invite across all divisions. The Eagles had a successful first match day of the year. They faced some adversity with an injury, players playing in new spots for the first time, other teams already having played matches, and some windier conditions…and in the end the team was up for these challenges and had a strong showing. The team finished in 4th place. Every single flight from 5 doubles to 1 singles also got at least 1 match win on the day which was awesome. This was many players first ever varsity matches and to get a first varsity match win on day one was huge. We also had several flights win more than 1 match. The important thing is we improved as a team and we are a better team as a result of competing on Saturday. Here is more detailed by flight results:
1 Singles: Natalie Poortenga finished in 1st place and was the tournament champion! She won all 3 matches in straight sets against Allegan, St. Joe, and Romeo. Natalie proved she was the best player at that tournament convincingly and had a strong showing to start the year out 3-0.
2 Singles: Alex Vermeulen finished in 3rd place. Alex started off the day with a double bagel against TC West and ended up losing a close match against a strong Romeo team. She capped off her day with a straight set win against St. Joe. Alex starts the year off 2-1.
3 Singles: Kaitlyn Schmitt finishing as the consolation champ. She played a really tough W. Ottawa player in the first and played one of her best matches she has ever played against an undefeated opponent. She went on to win in straight sets against Armada and TC West and played some solid tennis.
4 Singles: Adelyn Breuninger played her first every varsity and singles match and we are proud of the way she competed. She played two tough opponents to start against Romeo and EGR but played a lot of long points and competed well. Her attitude and mental game was stellar throughout too. The Romeo player even made the finals and ended up retiring early, probably because Adelyn wore her out so much! She proceeded to get her first varsity singles win in her last match winning 6-0, 6-1.
1 Doubles: Frankie Volkema/Anna Jacobsen came in 7th place. They faced a strong W. Ottawa team first and then proceeded to play two really close and strong matches against Armada and Allegan. They got better with every match and we are proud of their growth throughout the day.
2 Doubles: Betta Klein/Gwyn Artz were consolation champions. They faced a strong St. Joe team first that ended up almost winning 1st place and then also proceeded to continue to improved in each match by beating Armada and Allegan and pretty convincing fashion to go 2-1 on the day.
3 Doubles: Rachel Larsen/Lucy VanDrunnen finished in 2nd place. These two girls dominated in their first two matches winning in straight sets in both against Armada and EGR. They faced a pretty strong W. Ottawa team in the finals and lost 3-6, 1-6 but they played some really good tennis and almost every game went to deuce. Proud of them for making it to the finals.
4 Doubles: Charline Dahu/Anneka Vermeulen finished in 2nd place. This was the first matches these two had played together and they looked like a veteran duo out there as they were in sync physically and mentally all day and were constantly adjusting and talking strategy. They won in straight sets against two solid opponents of EGR and WO and then went on to lose a very close match against Romeo 6-7, 2-6. They competed very strong until the end and we are proud of their performance.
5 Doubles: Emily Vandenberge/Johanna Bos finished in 3rd place. These girls were strong from the start beating Allegan 6-0, 6-1 in their first match and they proceeded to play a good match against a strong W. Ottawa team and came up just short. Once again, another team who I felt like improved with every match as they went on as I was most proud of their last match beating EGR 7-6, 6-2. They were down early but were thinking strategy and adjustments the whole time to where they made a come back in the set to trigger the tie break in which they proved to be the more clutch players. They then did not let them get any more momentum by dominating in the last set.
5 Doubles: Olivia Christians/Madeline Small finished in 6th place. These girls were called up last second to play and I couldn't have been more proud of the way competed, especially on a short notice to prepare. They played a strong team that ended up winning the 5D draw first and then proceeded to crush Armada in the 2nd match. They then finished with their best match of the day losing a close match to where they never gave up until the end. These two girls had some of the most energy, best footwork, and positive attitudes of the day and that is exactly what are looking for out of our doubles teams.
