Girls Varsity Volleyball lose in Semi-Final Match

Eagles Lose: 1 - 3
The varsity volleyball team was defeated in an exciting MHSAA semi-final match at Kellogg Arena by #1 ranked Notre Dame Prep.  The Eagles lost the first set with a close score of 23-25, and turned it around in the second set, winning 25-21.  The third set was a battle back and forth, but the team again lost 23-25.  Notre Dame Prep went on the win the 4th set 25-16, and proceeded to win the championship on Saturday in 3 sets.  Thank you to the fans who came to support this wonderful team!

Eagles Win: 3 - 0
The Eagles varsity volleyball team will be returning to Battle Creek Kellogg Arena for the State Semi-Finals after a three set win over Niles.  The Eagles worked through the first set with some mid-set runs that saw the score tied a number of times, but with the Eagles going on an 8 point run to close out the set. The Eagles came out fast in the second set and never looked back, ultimately winning the set by an impressive margin of 25-4.  Abby Ames and Alyssa DeVries led with service runs. Niles rebounded in the third set and kept things close throughout the set.  Niles pulled to within 22-19, but the Eagles scored 3 of the next 4 points to close out the match with a 25-20 third set score.   The Eagles had a great team effort, with fantastic offensive efforts, as well as gritty defense.  Evie Doezema had 19 kills and Kate Breems added 6 kills and 2 blocks.  Makenzie Ritsema was tough at the net with 4 blocks.  Dig leaders were Grace Spoelma with 14, Rowan Cebulski 13, and Hanna Bredeweg with 11. Calista Bremer added 3 kills and 6 digs.  Alyssa DeVries provided 27 assists and 11 digs.  Gabby Richardson and Abby Ames added 2 aces each. The Eagles will play Notre Dame Prep on Friday at 4:30pm at Kellogg Arena.

Eagles Win: 3 - 1
In a thrilling Regional Final match between the #2 ranked Eagles and #5 ranked Crusaders, the Eagles came out on top with a tremendous team effort, winning in 4 sets.  The Crusaders were fired up in the first set, and while the Eagles made some great plays, they dropped the set 22-25.  The Eagles rebounded and took the second set 25-20 behind a gutsy late game serving run by Gabrielle Richardson.  The third set went to extra points with Unity having 2 set point opportunities, but the Eagles showed determination and grit by siding out each of those and then finishing at 29-27.  The Eagles took the momentum into the fourth set, taking an early lead and going on to a 25-13 victory.   Evie Doezema cranked out a career high 42 kills.  Alyssa DeVries added 53 assists, with clutch kills coming from Calista Bremer (6), Kate Breems (6), and Rowan Cebulski (5).  The Eagles again dominated at the service line, with a team 97% serve percentage, and a few long runs from Abby Ames (3 aces), Grace Spoelma (1 ace) and Gabrielle Richardson (2 aces).  Makenzie Ritsema had a team high 3 blocks.  Hanna Bredeweg led in digs with 18, followed by Grace (16 digs) and Rowan and Evie (15 digs each).   The Eagles advance to the Quarterfinals on Tuesday night at 7:30pm against Niles.

The varsity volleyball team won their Regional Semi-final match against a tough Whitehall team in 3 sets with scores 25-22, 25-12, 25-20.  The team will face Unity Christian on Thursday evening in the Regional Final.

The Eagles defeated Forest Hills Eastern in the first round of districts in 3 sets with scores 25-14, 25-13, 25-14.  The team advances to the District Semi-finals on Wednesday evening against Grand River Prep. Evie Doezema had 13 kills, and Kate Breems and Calista Bremer added 7 kills each.  Alyssa DeVries had 24 assists and 8 digs.  Makenzie Ritsema and Rowan Cebulski added 5 blocks.  Grace Spoelma, Rowan and Evie added 10 digs each.

Eagles Win: 3 - 0
In the final regular season match of the year, the Eagles defeated the Byron Center Bulldogs in 3 straight sets, 25-13, 25-15, 25-18.  The Eagles won the serve pass aspect of the game with 97% serving as a team and aces from Abby Ames, Gabby Richardson and Alyssa DeVries. The team also had an impressive team hitting percentage of .281 with Kills coming from Evie Doezema, Calista Bremer, Kate Breems, Rowan Cebulski and Makenzie Ritsema.  Grace Spoelma and Hanna Bredeweg added strong defensive performances.  The Eagles begin post season play on Monday against Forest Hills Eastern at Kellogsville.

Eagles Lose: 2 - 3
In a rematch of top teams in the OK white conference, the Eagles fell to FHN in 5 sets.  After losing the first set in extra points 24-26, the Eagles rebounded and won the next 2 sets 25-20 and 25-18.  Taking an early lead in the 4th set was not enough to seal the win, as the Huskies regained momentum and won the set 25-21.  Girls on both teams made exciting plays in the 5th, with FHN taking the win 15-12.  Evie Doezema led the team with 25 kills, followed by Kate Breems with 10 kills.  Kate and Makenzie Ritsema had 5 blocks each, Grace Spoelma led with 30 digs and Alyssa DeVries with 41 assists.  The Eagles will play Byron Center at home on Thursday at 6pm.

The varsity volleyball team defeated Northview 3-0 (25-7, 25-4, 25-17) in the first round of the conference tournament.  The Eagles were aggressive and accurate from the serving line - serving 96% with 9 aces.  The team offense ran smoothly with 33 kills on .307 hitting percentage.  The tournament semi-finals will be next Tuesday in a rematch with Forest Hills Northern.

Eagles Win: 6 - 1
  The Eagles had an outstanding performance at the Beast of the East tournament on Saturday, going 6-1 for the day and placing 2nd out of 32 teams.  Beast of the East is the toughest tournament of the year in Michigan, featuring the top ranked teams in the state, including, from Division 1, #1 ranked Marian, #2 ranked Dakota, #4 Rockford, #7 Mercy, #8 Forest Hills Northern, #10 Novi, and from Division 2: #1 ranked Notre Dame Prep, #3 ranked GR Christian, #4 North Branch, #5 Lakewood, and #7 Cadillac.  The Eagles had strong overall play, including solid serve receive passing and aggressive serving.  The team did not drop a set until the loss to Marian in the finals.  The pool play saw the Eagles earn victories over Oxford, Grosse Pointe South and Coopersville.  The team continued with a win over Lakeland in the first round of the Gold Division Tournament, followed by a come from behind victory over Bloomfield Hills in the quarterfinals.   The semi-finals saw the Eagles playing Mercy, who defeated Notre Dame Prep in the quarterfinals.  The Eagles came out fast with an early lead, winning the first set 25-17.  The second set started out a little closer, but the Eagles pushed through to win decisively 25-13. The finals had the Eagles playing Marian, in a match of last year's Division 1 State Champion (Marian) and  last year's Division 2 Champion (GRC).  The teams battled in the first set as the score went back and forth and tied at 19-19, before Marian pulled away.  The Eagles played hard in the second set, but fell short, and came in as the tournament runner-up. Overall, the Eagles had great performances from all and are looking forward to the Conference Tournament this week and next week.

Eagles Win: 3 - 0
The varsity volleyball team won in 3 sets against East Grand Rapids in the final match of the first round of conference play.  This win put the Eagles in a 3-way tie for first place with FHC and FHN, with all 3 three teams finishing 6-1.  The conference tournament, which begins next week, will decide the conference champion.  Evie Doezema led the way with 26 kills.  Abby Ames served for 24 service points with 4 aces.  Alyssa DeVries provided 4 aces and 34 assists.  Hanna Bredeweg had 14 digs and Grace Spoelma 10 digs.

Eagles Lose: 2 - 3
The varsity Eagles fell in 5 sets to Forest Hills Northern.  After a special time celebrating our 5 seniors: Abby Ames, Kate Breems, Calista Bremer, Alyssa DeVries, and Evie Doezema, the team came out aggressive, winning the first set decisively, 25-11.  The next 3 sets were hard fought battles, with the Eagles winning the second and the Huskies winning the 3rd and 4th sets.  The 5th and deciding set began with the Huskies taking an early lead.  The Eagles fought back and had a match point opportunity at 14-13, but the Huskies managed to side out and win the set 16-14.  Thank you to so many fans for coming to support the team and create a fun atmosphere to play in!

The varsity volleyball team defeated Greenville in three sets with scores of 25-7, 25-7, 25-14.  Alyssa DeVries served 26 times with 5 aces and 0 errors, and added 28 assists.  Evie Doezema put down 20 kills (.515 hitting percentage) and added 10 digs.  Also contributing to attack finishing plays were Calista Bremer (6 kills), Kate Breems (3 kills and 2 blocks), Makenzie Ritsema (3 kills and 4 blocks), and Kidist Nelson (2 kills).  Defensively the Eagles had a strong team effort back row from libero Grace Spoelma (13 digs), Abby Ames (12 digs), Hanna Bredeweg, Gabby Richardson (3 aces) and Rachel Larsen. Next week Tuesday, OK White conference leaders GRC (5-0) and FHN (5-0) will battle for first place in the regular season.

The varsity volleyball team fell to the Hudsonville Eagles last night in a battle of ranked teams.  Hudsonville (26-1) came out strong at home, as GRC has been their only loss of the season.  The first set went back and forth with a final score of 25-21.  Hudsonville took that momentum and won the next two sets to win the match.

Eagles Win: 3 - 1
The volleyball team traveled south to Byron Center and won the match 3-1, putting the team at 4-0 in the competitive OK White Conference.  The Eagles came out focused and determined, winning the first 2 sets 25-13, 25-17.  The Bulldogs found a way to fight back, taking the third set 25-18.  Refusing to go 5 sets, the Eagles got gritty and won the 4th set with a score of 25-21.  Evie Doezema showed why she is a Top 10 finalist for Miss Volleyball by cranking out a career high 32 kills, 23 digs, and 3 aces.  Setter Alyssa DeVries contributed 41 assists and 2 aces.  Kate Breems put down 7 kills, and Calista Bremer and Makenzie Ritsema added 4 each.  Libero Grace Spoelma was key in the back row adding 17 digs and 20 serve receives, while Hanna Bredeweg also added 14 digs and 10 serve receives.  Gabrielle Richardson contributed 2 aces and 2 assists, and Abby Ames added 2 aces.  The team will travel to Hudsonville on Thursday evening in a battle of top ranked teams.

Eagles Win: 3 - 1
With a fun student section showing their support and enthusiasm, the Eagles overcame a first set loss, and won the next 3 sets in a battle between 2 highly ranked teams.  FHC started out strong and took the first set with a scores of 25-15.  The Eagles rebounded with confidence and won the second set with the same score of 25-15.  Tied 1-1 the team worked hard to put pressure with serving to disrupt the Rangers' offense.  The Eagles served an impressive 96% for the night, with Gabrielle Richardson and Alyssa DeVries providing 4 aces each and Abby Ames adding 3.  Defense would prove to be the key to success, with Grace Spoelma picking up a career high 28 digs, Evie Doezema adding 16 digs and Hanna Bredeweg 14.  Also adding to the defense, Kate Breems posted 4 blocks and Makenzie Ritsema and Evie added 3 blocks each.  Evie also led the team in kills with 28, followed by Kate with 8 and Calista Bremer with 5.  Thank you to all the students and fans who came out to show their support and make it a special night!

The varsity Eagle volleyball team moved to 2-0 in conference play last night, defeating the Wildcats of Northview 3-0.  Evie Doezema led with 22 kills, and Makenzie Ritsema added 8.  Grace Spoelma served 7 aces along with 12 digs, and Alyssa DeVries added 29 assists.  The team is looking forward to a rematch with Forest Hills Central on Thursday at 6pm.

Eagles Win: 3 - 0
The Eagles won their home opener against Lowell in 3 sets.  Thank you to all the fans who came to support the team!  The first set went into extra points with both teams battling back and forth.  Surviving 2 set points for Lowell, and with the score tied at 27-27, Hanna Bredeweg and Kate Breems secured a block to give the Eagles 28.  Hanna served the next point, with the rally ending with a diving dig by Grace Spoelma, assist by Alyssa DeVries and kill by Evie Doezema to close out the set 29-27.   The Eagles took an early lead in set 2, and won with a score of 25-16.  With renewed energy, Lowell made the Eagles work hard for the win in the third set, 25-22.  Evie pounded down a career high of 28 kills in the match, averaging 9 kills per set.  Grace and Alyssa recorded 11 digs each, with Alyssa adding 30 assists.  Abby Ames added 8 digs and 100% serving.  Hanna,  Makenzie Ritsema and Kate were strong at the net providing 6, 6, and 4 block assists.  Calista Bremer added timely kills, most notably when the Eagles were down 24-25 in the first set to tie the score up.  Gabrielle Richardson, Kidist Nelson and Rachel Larsen each provided serving and defense to give a spark to the team.   The Eagles are off this weekend, and return to conference play next week Tuesday against Northview.

The varsity volleyball team competed in the East Kentwood Invitational on Saturday.  The morning began with wins against Holland Christian and Wayland in pool play.  In the championship round, the Eagles faced a defensively tough Rockford team, and lost in two close sets 25-27, 22-25.  The team showed great resiliency by rebounding from that loss and immediately playing an undefeated Hudsonville. With renewed focus and determination, the Eagles handed Hudsonville their first loss of the season, winning in 2 sets 25-20, 25-22.  Next game is at HOME on Thursday against Lowell at 6pm.

Eagles Win: 3 - 0
The varsity volleyball team defeated Coopersville in 3 sets.  The first set remained close to the finish with the score 25-22.  The Eagles fought for control early in the 2nd set and won 25-13.  The third set began with senior Evie Doezema recording her 1,000th career kill and ended with a winning score of 25-19.  Evie posted 21 kills for the evening, hitting .465, as well as 14 digs.  Calista Bremer, Rowan Cebulski, and Kate Breems also provided important kills at strategic times throughout the match.  Makenzie Ritsema and Kate Breems provided 4 blocks and Alyssa DeVries added 29 assists.  Grace Spoelma (2 aces), Abby Ames and Hannah Bredeweg served aggressively and with 100% accuracy.

The Varsity Eagles went 1-1 at the Wayland tri, beating Wayland 2-0 and losing in 3 sets to Forest Hills Central. The team fought hard in the 3rd set with FHC, pushing the score to 16-18.  The team travels to Coopersville next Tuesday.

The varsity volleyball team competed at the Rockford Rumble Tournament on Saturday, finishing tied for 3rd place.  The Eagles defeated Mattawan (25-17, 25-14), Portage Central (25-15, 25-17), and Byron Center (25-13, 25-22), and lost to #2 ranked Division 1 Hudsonville (19-25, 16-25).  Evie Doezema continues to dominate, accumulating 42 kills and averaging 5 kills per set.  Calista Bremer added 22 kills and Kate Breems added 17 kills and 10 block assists.  Rowan Cebulski (10 block assists) and Makenzie Ritsema (7 block assists) made big contributions to the defense.  Alyssa DeVries continues to run the offense efficiently with 75 assists.  The team is serving aggressively and accurately - 91% and Grace Spoelma leads the team in points and aces. Abby Ames, Gabrielle Richardson, Kidist Nelson and Rachel Larsen continue to provide sparks of serving, serve receiving and defense.  
Girls Varsity Volleyball @ Portage Central Invite

The Varsity volleyball team started their season by winning the Portage Central Invitational on Saturday, going 4-0.  The Eagles played tough competition, defeating Marshall (25-16, 25-7), Gull Lake (22-25, 25-10, 16-14), Rockford (23-25, 25-20, 15-10) and Portage Central (25-23, 25-18).  Leaders for the day were Evie Doezema with 44 kills, 9 block assists, and 20 digs; Alyssa DeVries with 85 assists and 23 digs; Calista Bremer with 27 kills; Grace Spoelma with 18 digs and 7 aces; Rowan Cebulski with 10 block assists, and Kate Breems with 9 block assists for the day, and an impressive .769 hitting percentage against Gull Lake (10 kills on 13 attempts).  The team showed a lot of determination throughout the day, and had several exciting rallies against a strong Rockford team.  The team will be playing in the Rockford Rumble Tournament on Saturday.
