Eagle Football Falls Short vs. Lowell, 35-63

Eagles Lose: 35.00 - 63.00
In the final game of the 2023 season, GR Christian football took to the field at Lowell High School on a quintessential fall football night. Crisp air, orange and red leaves, and the classic aura of the "Friday Night Lights" set the perfect stage for the end of a difficult but valuable season for the boys in Columbia Blue and Black. As has become a bit of a trend this season, the Eagle offense came out firing early as senior QB Zay Caviness connected with senior WR Jude Klunder on a beautiful 42-yard strike on the very first play from scrimmage. The early drive was capped off by a 17 yard screen pass to junior RB Tony Phillips and the Eagles jumped ahead 7-0. Not to be outdone, the Red Arrows responded in kind with a one-play drive of their own. In a first half that would continue to go back and forth, the Block C boys found additional touchdowns from Caviness (1 yard run) and senior DeWayne Goree (93 yard screen pass). Critical ball-handling mistakes proved fatal for the Eagles as a few turnovers led to the host's 33-21 lead at halftime. Despite a pair of tremendous Caviness to Klunder TD passes in the second half, Lowell started to run away with the game in the 3rd quarter as the under-manned Eagle squad started to run out of gas. Offensively, GRC was led by Caviness and Klunder as they were all year. Caviness ended Friday night with 335 yards passing and 4 passing TDs to go along with 1 rushing TD. Klunder reeled in 4 dynamic catches for 2 scores. Goree was strong running the ball and provided the aforementioned electric TD catch. Zeke Heerema and Ben Geers were also phenomenal as passing game threats - brining in 3 and 4 catches respectively and each drawing at least one pass interference call as well.  The sustained effort all night from the defense was admirable as several players were all over the field. Senior Zach Clark led the Eagles with 9.5 tackles while Geers and Phillips also chipped in 8.5 tackles each. Junior Will Owens and sophomore Davis Hutt were both also tenacious in racking up over 5 tackles. A duo of sophomore DBs held it down on the edge as Ty Damstra and De'Aires Kuiper continued to gain valuable experience in big-time situations. This year we had only 3 senior players who were in the football program for all four years of high school. Though we picked up some great additions along the way, the following 3 guys were critical to the team in many ways this year: -Senior Zay Caviness was a starter at RB and LB last year who spent the offseason learning how to play QB at the request of the coaching staff because we had a need. All he did was learn the most difficult position in a few months and then pass for 1,760 yards and 20 TDs, rush for 473 yards and 8 more TDs, and play a lot of defense throughout the year as well. We are very proud of Zay for his team-first attitude and for shouldering the heavy burden of QB so well this year! -Senior Jude Klunder caught 41 passes for 631 yards and 12 TDs, EVEN THOUGH he missed two games due to injury! Jude was a true "go-to" WR this year and put together an amazing performance week in and week out! -Senior Henry Jackson was our only returning starter (and only senior) on the O and D line; he brought his steady personality and tenacious work ethic to the line of scrimmage every day. Henry was a great player at left tackle all year and greatly expanded his role from last year by playing a lot of defense as well. Henry's greatest contribution, however, came every week after the game was over when he would always be the last man out of the locker room on a Friday night because he would spend so much time cleaning, sweeping, and tidying up any messes in the locker room. Thanks Henry for being a true servant leader! Though this was a difficult season, we are incredibly proud of our players for how they worked, competed, developed their character, represented our school and program, and most importantly how they grew to know, trust, and love Jesus Christ. Go Eagles!

Eagles Lose: 13.00 - 35.00
For the second week in a row, the GR Christian football team battled the elements en route to a difficult OK-White conference loss. The visiting Yellow Jackets of Greenville High School spoiled the Eagle senior night celebration by using a bruising ground game to defeat the Eagles by a score of 35-13.  Offense was hard to come by in the rain, but a trio of "Block C Backs" carrying the ball out of the Eagle backfield kept the offense moving - Zay Caviness, DeWayne Goree, and Tony Phillips all ran tough and determined. Zeke Heerema, Ethan Ogle, and Jude Klunder all registered multiple catches while Klunder and Caviness accounted for the Eagle scores - catching and running for touchdowns, respectively. The "Black and Columbia Blue D" was led by senior linebackers Goree and Ben Geers - each accounting for 6 tackles. Aaron Gholston, Ethan Ogle, JR Jones, Zach Clark, Will Owens, and Davis Hutt were all active as well keeping the stat sheet packed with tackles.  GR Christian will travel to Lowell this Friday to complete the regular season vs. the Red Arrows at 7:00 PM. Go Eagles!
GRC Football Falls to East Grand Rapids, 20-42

Eagles Lose: 20.00 - 42.00
The GRC varsity football team suffered a tough defeat to rival East Grand Rapids on Friday night by a score of 20-42. On a night that featured tremendous fight from the Eagles, a few costly mistakes, and a ton of rain, the Pioneers proved to be too much down the stretch. The Block C Defense showed up to play and did well to slow down the vaunted EGR rushing attack, the special teams contributed a few big plays, and the Eagle offense did just enough to keep GRC in the game. After a soggy and physical first half that found the Eagles in a 21-7 hole, the Black & Blue D got a stop to start the 3rd quarter. A beautiful deep ball from senior QB Zay Caviness to receiver Jude Klunder narrowed the gap to 21-14. Another defensive stop gave the ball back to the offense. Driving to tie the game with 5 minutes left in the 3rd, the Eagles failed to convert a 3rd and 3. The ensuing Pioneer possession saw EGR use an explosive run play to start a drive that ultimately ended in a score. Although they never quit fighting, GR Christian was not able to recover from that critical sequence. Though the final score looks a bit lopsided, the Eagles were very much in the game deep into this contest. The offense was led through the air by Caviness, who overcame the wet conditions to throw for an impressive 212 yards and 2 touchdowns. 6 different Eagle receivers caught a pass on the night, highlighted by an incredible deep post to junior Aaron Gholston who zoomed through the Pioneer secondary for a 66 yard TD. Klunder added 4 catches for 58 yards and the aforementioned TD, while senior Zach Clark chipped in 4 catches for 44 yards. The ground game was led by junior Tony Phillips' bruising running and sophomore De'Airs Kuiper, who scored his first varsity touchdown on an electric 14 yard run.  The Eagle defense played inspired and put together one of their best performances this year. Senior Ben Geers was relentless with 9 tackles while Zay Caviness, DeWayne Goree, Ethan Ogle, Tony Phillips, and Davis Hutt all each contributed 6 or more tackles. Additionally, Hutt made the play of the day by intercepting the EGR QB late in the 3rd quarter to give the ball back to the Eagle offense in a tight game. GRC will now turn its attention to senior night and their final home game of the season as they take on Greenville High School at 7:00 PM next Friday. Go Eagles!
GRC Football Falls to Northview, 27-35

Eagles Lose: 27.00 - 35.00
As the GR Christian community filed into Eagles Stadium to take in some high school football on a beautiful fall homecoming evening, the Eagle football team prepared to face OK-White foe Northview. Despite falling behind, the boys in Blue and Black showed great toughness and heart all through the game - coming up exactly 8 yards short at the end of the night, leaving the visiting Wildcats as the victors this time by a score of 27-35. The Eagles used a dynamic 11-play drive on their first possession to take the lead on a beauty of a throw by senior QB Zay Caviness to receiver Jude Klunder. Northview was able to answer in short order with a TD of their own. Keeping pace, GRC marched another 73 yards over 8 plays and used a short Caviness run to retake the lead. A frenzied first quarter was then capped off in dramatic fashion as Northview returned the ensuing kickoff for a TD. Eagle miscues were answered by another two Northview scores, which gave the visitors a 28-13 lead at halftime. In the midst of a difficult season, and facing a halftime deficit, the Block C Boys had every reason in the world to quit... but they dug in and showed the type of grit and toughness we have come to expect from our Eagles. After conceding another score to start the 3rd, the boys got to work. A 9-play drive covering 64 yards was capped by an acrobatic TD catch by Klunder, then a Ben Toly onside kick was dramatically recovered by senior Ben Geers (after an Aaron Gholston extreme head-over-heels effort). Another 9-play drive was punctuated by Zeke Heerema with the catch of the year over the top of two Northview defenders in the end zone. The Eagle defense then came up huge with a fumble recovery to give the offense a chance. 11 plays later, GRC had moved all the way down to the 8 yard line and was facing 4th down... the final heave from Caviness fell incomplete and the Eagles fell just short of a miraculous comeback. Offensively, the Eagles were led by the entire offensive line of Henry Jackson, JR Jones, Davis Hutt, Cam Morgan, and Dane Fitzgibbon. GR Christian attempted 28 passes on the night without a single sack and averaged nearly 5 yards per carry on the ground as well. Other offensive leaders included Caviness (108 rush yards and a TD, 175 passing yards and 3 TDs), Klunder (6 catches for 83 yards and 2 TDs), Heerema and senior Ethan Ogle who both registered 3 catches, and junior Tony Phillips who contributed with both great catches and strong runs.  Defensively, senior DeWayne Goree set the pace with 8 tackles, while Geers had 5.5 tackles (2 of them for a loss), and Phillips added the fumble recovery. GR Christian heads to East Grand Rapids High School next Friday to play in a rivalry game vs. the Pioneers at 7:00 PM. Go Eagles!
Eagles Run Out of Gas vs. Forest Hills Northern

Eagles Lose: 34.00 - 64.00
On a wonderful fall evening, the Eagles traveled to Forest Hills Northern, looking to play the spoiler on the Husky homecoming festivities. Our small but determined and scrappy GRC team fought hard, but ultimately came up short by a score of 34-64. The Eagle offense came out strong for the second week in a row, taking things to new heights this week as they were able to put the ball in the end zone on each of their first three drives, and 4 of 5 possessions in the first half. However, the host Huskies were able to keep pace by scoring three of their own first half touchdowns. The Block C Boys took a 27-21 lead into the locker room at halftime but were unable to match FHN down the stretch as the host's rushing attack proved too much for GR Christian to slow down. When the dust settled, a battered, bruised, and out-manned Eagle team had simply run out of gas against a physical and relentless opponent.  The high-flying offensive performance was started off by senior Malachi Hooser who scored the first GRC touchdown on a beautiful 53-yard strike from QB Zay Caviness. Not to be left out, senior Jude Klunder kept it going on the following drive with a 5-yard screen pass from Caviness. Tired of watching his friends have all the fun, Caviness capped off the ensuing drive with an 8 yard TD scamper of his own. The Eagles secured the halftime lead with an amazing 16-yard moment of brilliance from Klunder, who snagged a Caviness pass while blanketed in double coverage with under a minute left in the second quarter. The second half saw continued strong play from the Eagle passing game and an electric 75-yard touchdown run from senior DeWayne Goree. Junior Aaron Gholston also chipped in 5 catches for the Eagles. The "Block C Defense" was led by Goree's 11 tackles; he was aided by 6 tackles a piece from Gholston, Caviness, and junior Ben Toly.  With most of the boys playing on both sides of the ball, everything that we do truly is a team effort. We are proud of the continued effort, resilience, and strength of this group of players as they fight to represent the GRC community with passion and class. The Eagles welcome Northview HS to Eagle Stadium next week for a homecoming game showdown. Go Eagles!
Eagle Football Falls to Byron Center 49-11

Eagles Lose: 11.00 - 49.00
On a beautiful fall evening that was tailor-made for high school football, the GR Christian Eagles traveled to OK White heavy weight opponent Byron Center for a clash with the Bulldogs. Down a few key players to injury and illness, the Eagles came out hot by opening the game with an 11 play drive that culminated in a Jordan Rodgers field goal to give the visiting Eagles a 3-0 lead. Up to the challenge, the Bulldogs responded with 27 unanswered points to take a comfortable lead into halftime. As you have come to expect, there was no quit in the Block C Boys - they battled tough throughout the game but simply did not have the answers or firepower to come out on top. The offense was led by resilient senior QB Zay Caviness, who led the Columbia Blue and Black in both passing and rushing yards. To this point in the season, as GR Christian has navigated a brutal stretch of its schedule, Caviness has completed 66% of his passes, thrown 7 TDs and run for another 4... not bad for a converted running back!  The offensive fireworks on Friday were provided by junior receiver Aaron Gholston who caught 3 passes for 73 yards, including an explosive 61 yard touchdown pass. Zeke Heerema, Ben Toly, Ben Geers, and Tony Phillips all also joined the party by adding multiple catches for the Eagles. Defensively, GR Christian was paced by junior linebackers Will Owens and Tony Phillips who both played with great effort and physicality for all 4 quarters - Phillips registered 8 tackles, 2 of them for loss while Owens contributed 9 tackles, 1 for loss. Caviness and senior Zach Clark were also dynamic on defense while Davis Hutt and Henry Jackson played strong at the line of scrimmage. Nearing the halfway point of the season, the Eagles travel to Forest Hills Northern High School on Friday for another important OK White match up. Go Eagles!

Eagles Lose: 7.00 - 37.00
In a physical OK-White matchup, the GR Christian football team came up short on Friday evening by a score of 37-7. The Rangers played a fast and hard-hitting style of football that the Eagles struggled to have an answer for. Coming off a season in which they reached the Division 2 state championship game, FHC showed the Boys in Black & Blue what it looks like to play at another level. We didn't quit and we didn't back down, but the night belonged to the visiting team. The Eagle offense sputtered on and off throughout the contest, but was led by senior wide receiver Malachi Hooser's 6 catches who was joined in the passing game by Aaron Gholston, Ben Toly, and Ben Geers who all added 3 receptions each. The lone GRC score came on an impressive 68 yard TD catch and run from Geers who snagged the pass in traffic and then proceeded to employ a devastating stiff arm to a defender en route to out-running everyone to the end zone. Defensively, the Eagles were led by Hooser, Geers, and senior DeWayne Goree in tackles, while senior newcomer Ethan Ogle also made his presence felt at defensive end in his first game coming off an injury.  The Block C Boys continue to walk the challenging path of conference play as they travel to take on a tough and consistent 3-0 Byron Center team this coming Friday. Full of toughness and character, they will be ready for the challenge. Go Eagles!
Eagle Football Out-Duels Fruitport HS

Eagles Win: 36.00 - 22.00
The GR Christian football team took to the road for the second contest of the 2023 season, driving to the Muskegon area to take on the Fruitport HS Trojans. Last year the Eagles needed a dramatic comeback to topple the Trojans and were hoping to start off strong this time around.  Thanks to DeWayne Goree, the Eagles found the early flash they were looking for when the senior linebacker intercepted a Fruitport pass on the first play of the game. Not wanting to be left out of the fun, senior QB Zay Caviness cashed in on the first offensive play of the game with a 30-yard touchdown scamper. After a defensive stop, the Eagles were up 7-0 with the ball and threatening to score again when the first of what would be many fumbles stopped the early momentum. The ensuing Fruitport score ensured that the boys in Black & Blue would be in for a fight. Strong play by junior QB Isaac Kuiper and a 42-yard Jordan Rodgers field goal kept the Eagles close as Fruitport looked to take control in the first half; GR Christian carried a 16-10 deficit into the locker room at halftime looking to make a few adjustments and settle in to the second half. In an impressive display of resolve, the "Block C Boys" responded with gritty play throughout the second half. The Eagle offense woke up and was led by Caviness, wide receivers Zeke Heerema and Jude Klunder, tough running from junior Will Owens, and consistent play from the offensive line. Defensively, GR Christian was paced by senior linebacker Zach Clark's 10.5 tackles and solid play up front. With Fruitport driving to try and tie the game in the 4th quarter, senior Malachi Hooser provided the exclamation point with a very athletic "pick-6" to seal the deal for the Eagles. Caviness was dominant for the second game in a row, registering 133 rushing yards and 2 TDs on the ground to go along with 170 passing yards and 2 TDs through the air. Through his first two games at QB, the senior signal-caller has accounted for 9 touchdowns! Senior Jude Klunder continued his great play by contributing 8 catches for 119 yards and 2 TDs. Zeke Heerema chipped in 5 catches for 56 yards, and Owens added 36 tough rushing yards. The road gets tougher for the Eagles moving forward as they begin OK-White conference play next week with defending champ Forest Hills Central. See you next week Friday for a 7:00 PM home game - Go Eagles!
Varsity Football Goes Down Swinging to Rival Sailors

Eagles Lose: 42.00 - 66.00
The GRC Eagle football team took to the field on Friday night in front of a raucous home crowd to test their mettle against the defending state champion South Christian Sailors. In a pair of games last year, the Eagles' familiar foe proved overwhelming in two resounding wins of the same score: 42-7. As the boys in Blue & Black took to the field on this day, they hoped to be able to show the progress that an off-season of hard work can often provide. And though the Sailors again came out on top, there was a different feel in the air as the faithful at Eagle stadium begin to wonder if the tide may be turning for GRC... The Eagle offense, led by senior QB-convert Zay Caviness, lit up the night sky with 42 points and over 400 yards of offense. The scoring was "kicked off" by junior Ben Toly's blistering 2nd quarter kick return for a touchdown, which was followed later in the first half by a well-executed 2-minute drive capped off by a Caviness TD pass to Jude Klunder. Though the visiting team also rolled up the points, the GRC boys showed their inner "dawg" by not backing down. Second half touchdown passes to senior Malachi Hooser and another to Klunder, along with a pair of Caviness Rushing touchdowns, kept the Eagles in the fight well into the 4th quarter. With the Sailors keeping pace on the scoreboard, the Eagles never caught up - but they also never gave up! The defense was paced by senior linebacker DeWayne Goree's 11 tackles, sacks by Ben Geers and Davis Hutt, and an acrobatic interception by junior Aaron Gholston. With reasons for hope, and a lot of work to do, the Eagles turn around with a short week as they head to the Muskegon area to play Fruitport High School on Thursday evening at 7:00 PM. Go Eagles!
