Eagle fans, We recently had the special privilege of celebrating the contributions and accomplishments of our seniors on the Grand Rapids Christian Eagles Boys Varsity Soccer Team.  We asked each of our Seniors parents to share some thoughts about their son. Will Bufalini Parents: Nathan and Jen BufaliniWillie B.--What a ride it has been watching you do what you love. At age 2, you told us you wanted to be a goalie. At age 14, you became a Grand Rapids Christian Eagle. Those decisions have had such a wonderful impact on our family. Soccer has taken us all over the country - turning your love of soccer into incredible memories for all of us. Soccer led you to Tim Howard, who was successful because of his differences and showed you a path to greatness. Soccer also brought you a sense of belonging and understanding that hard work pays off in all of the best ways.  Your faith and your curiosity about Jesus have grown so much in the past few years, and we l

The MHSAA has done a great job of continuing to work to help find balance in athletics by creating breaks in the seasons for athletes and coaches to be with their families. We love working hard to develop our gifts but appropriate scope is important also. Summer Dead Week: June 30-July 7- this is the actual dead week where there is zero contact between players and coaches and no use of district facilities. Pre-Season Down Time: the week prior to each season there is "down time" where there are no open gyms or captains practices. Only 4-player workouts and conditioning are permitted. You can find our official athletics start dates for 2024-2025 here!

Over 100 football and basketball officials have retired/resigned in the West Michigan area just this year.  In addition, the girls and boys basketball schedule is compacted such that they are playing 3 days a week.  Officials have gone from officiating 2 days a week to 5 and sometimes 6 days a week, with multiple games on each night. The number of high school athletics officials is becoming such that Freshman and JV games in a variety of sports may need to be officiated by coaches. The MHSAA needs more officials.  Why should you consider be an MHSAA official?  Ace Corey has been officiating for 15 year and this is what he had to say: It’s a great way to give back to the game that gave so much to me. I get to be a part of a team. It’s great for my physical health. It’s the best seat in the house. It’s great to work with kids and see their joy in what they are passionate about. The Varsity Eagles hosted the Plainwell Trojans in the district semifinal on a cool night for soccer at Eagle Stadium.  The Eagles started on the front foot pressuring the visitors and creating multiple corner kicks and half-chances.  The pressure finally paid off when Liam Jansen smashed one home under the goalkeeper to give the Eagles a deserved 1-0 advantage.   Despite some nervy moments late in the first half for the hosts, the first half would end 1-0.  The second half featured more of the same as the Eagles continued their high press in the opponent's half.  The Eagles would add to the lead when John Cassiday found fellow senior Peter Borst with a nifty ball that Borst finished at the far post to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.  However, just minutes later, the visitors would pull one back with a stunner to the upper corner off an Eagle giveaway in their defensive third.   Resolved to avoid what can be frenetic last minutes in a one-goal game, the Ea

On GRCH Homecoming evening the Eagles played tough all night against a physical WaylandUnion team with the final score not showing how close the game felt. In the first quarter,Wayland began with a couple of stops of the Eagle offense and two touchdowns of their own totake the lead. In the second, the GRC offense got rolling through the air, scoring threetouchdowns. Charlie King found Aaron Gholston behind the defense from 30 yards out, BrycenClark mashed in for the TD after an air-driven drive featuring Gholston and TE Brandt Alles. Thethird Eagles TD drive began with just over two minutes left in the half. King found Gholston,Alles, Drew Shripka, and Brycen Clark to efficiently move down the field. On a morning that finally felt like fall, the Eagles hosted the Kent Ottawa Invitational. This unique invitational allowed runners to either race the short course (3200m) or the long course (5000m). Junior Lilah Poel led the way in the short course by taking 2nd place - a mere 0.03 seconds out of 1st! She was followed by Zoe Hoekstra, Annika TerBeek, Joy Van Wyk, and Eva Lindstrom. In the long course, sophomore Lucy Waalkes led the way. She was followed by Vivi Duncan, Willa Peterson, Mia Powell, and Robyn Klein.  All of the short course runners PR'd as the 3200m isn't a typical high school distance! The JV Eagles pulled out an exciting victory 28-26 versus Wayland Union. The team was led by Bradley Nuiver with 3 touchdowns. Bradley connected with Braylon Taylor early in the game with a 68yd bomb for a touchdown and later in the game for a 40yd touchdown. While down in the fourth quarter 20-26 on 4th and 15 Nuiver escaped pressure and found Brieon Walton in the back of the endzone for the tying touchdown. The eagles who had missed 3 extra points earlier in the game would go for 2pts, and converted successfully. With a minute left in the game Wayland took a deep shot and hit a covered receiver who then broke a few tackles and looked as if he would score to dash the eagle hopes for victory. Freshman Charles Molenbeek had other plans as he chased the receiver down at the 20 yd line and stripped the ball away to give the ball to the eagles with 30 seconds left in the game. With 3 timeouts Wayland still had a chance to get the ball back but on a critical 4th and 1 Elden Grover sealed th

The Varsity Eagles opened the MHSAA tournament by hosting Thornapple Kellogg on a perfect night for soccer.   The hosts got off to a dream start when Isaac Williams played fellow senior John Cassiday in behind the defense.  Cassiday made no mistake as he beat the keeper to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.   Cassiday would add to the lead not long after when Graham DeJonge played a nice ball to the right flank where Will Bush was able to head the ball into the path of Cassiday who would once again get in behind the defense to beat the keeper.   Despite other quality chances, the Eagles were not able to add to their lead.  The visitors would stun the home side with a goal against the run of play with just a handful of minutes to go in the first half to make it 2-1 at the break.  The Eagles would come out on the front foot as the second half began and their consistent pressure would eventually result in the insurance goal they desired as Liam Jansen whipped

The Eagles faced a much improved Catholic Central side as they looked to complete their undefeated season on Monday night. The Eagles dominated possession, but struggled to create chances at the beginning of the game. Beckett Nieuwenhuis finally broke down the Catholic Central defense after finishing on a rebound. The Eagles took the 1-0 lead into half time. In the second half, the Eagles came out with a new energy. Gerrit Boer confidently struck a shot from 25 yards that flew into the top left corner. It was Gerrit Boer again, who played a beautiful 1-2 pass, and with great composure slotted it home past the Catholic Central goalie. Will Gruennert took a defender on, and hit a beautiful cross in to Alex Nelson who scored the Eagles final goal. Soren Mayer recorded the shut out, as the Eagles soared to a 4-0 victory.

The Varsity Eagles concluded the regular season by hosting the Cougars from Catholic Central.  Similarly to the last matchup between the two teams, Catholic Central got off to a dream start with an early goal.  The Eagles responded once again, however, as David Pontarelli headed home a Will Bush throw in to level the match.  The Eagles controlled much of the play in the second half and the pressure resulted in a John Cassiday goal that gave the home side a lead they would not relinquish as he beat a couple defenders and smashed one home through the keeper.  Peter Borst would make it 3-1 when he was fouled from behind in the box and went on to finish the spot kick.   Pontarelli would finish off the scoring when he poked home a goal from a Cassiday assist.  The Eagles begin the state tournament on Wednesday when they host Thornapple Kellogg for a 7pm match.  Go Eagles!

Out of the 52 teams in the D2 race, our varsity team, led by Simon Triezenberg's 4th place finish, placed 2nd to a strong Allendale team. The usual cast of Keegan Hoekstra (33rd), Sean Ryan (35th), Ashton Fink (40th), and Micah Small (44th) rounded out the scorers for our team all running between 16:29 and 16:39.  In the JV race, our Eagles took 4th place a mere 4 points behind 3rd and 5 points behind the 2nd place team. An unfortunate mid-race injury to Isaiah Lindstrom prevented our team from also taking home a 2nd place finish. Still, 5 Eagles took home medals for placing in the top 50: Elias DeJonge (3rd), Jacob Voetberg (6th), Calvin Brinks (11th), Sam DeYoung (29th), and Jonathan Falk (36th). The Eagles are back in action at Gainey on Saturday when we host the Kent Ottawa Invitational.
